Most interesting part-

quote:

Referring to departure terms and fees and adding that the Big 12 twice has canceled meetings on that matter with A&M, he said, "Why have two separate negotiations going on at once? ... So I told Brady if you're going to do it, let's get our attorneys together and make sure that we have a common platform for discussions here with the Big 12 because it would make no sense for us to independently try to negotiate a settlement."

I see that ATM is already comfortable with one of the SEC's guiding principles....

....working closely together with the other institutions in an effort to maintain a beneficial outcome and/or product.

i applaud you sir.

The funny thing is that Bowtie (Lofton) wasn't terribly popular before all of this started, and us going to the SEC has made him outright legendary to Aggies everywhere.

I won't get too deep into it, but his predecessor, Elsa Murano, was forced to resign when she wouldn't act as a puppet for the A&M System Chancellor who himself was a puppet for Texas governor Rick Perry. A lot of us assumed that he (Loftin) was named president because it was understood that he would act as a puppet where Dr. Murano wouldn't.

Well, since all of this has happened, Mike McKinney, the unpopular A&M System Chancellor has resigned. Rick Perry is almost never in Texas to do any puppeteering. Oh, and Bowtie got us to the best conference in the country, and I would love to buy him a beer.

It really is crazy how quickly Loftin's stock took off. Didn't think anyone would come close to matching the legacy of Dr. Gates--but Bowtie has put himself in the Aggie conscious for good decisions, too.

After reading this, I came away with the impression that Mr. Loftin is a genuine person that made the best decision he could with the facts presented to him.
Everyone in the conference recites "inequity" as a major fault line running through conference unity...I mean everyone except UT. Reminds me of the joke where a wife walks into her bedroom to find her husband in a compromised position with her best friend and he yells out: "You gonna believe, or your lying eyes!" I'm sticking with my lying eyes when it comes to the UT BS!

A&M's main problem has always been the good ol boy network, and resiting change come hell or high water.

Everything Loftin has done has been the polar opposite of that way of thinking. Love it.

Best thing to come out of the "Cuban Mistake" was Dr. Loftin. I hate to think what she would have done with the conference alignment.

I don't think she ever really got A&M whereas Dr. Gates became one of us and Dr. Loftin '70 was already one of us.

I wonder what Gates would have done if he'd never left A&M.....I'd like to think it would be SEC, but who the hell knows.

Interestingly enough, ever since John Sharp (Governor Perry's ROOMMATE at A&M and his political rival) took over this past summer as chancellor, things have moved really fast.

I'd classify Sharp as the anti-puppet.

I disagree politically with John Sharp. But I will say this--one day, back in the Spring of '97, I met him and Perry on the same day. And I remember thinking that Perry was a typical vacuous politician and that Sharp was the type of guy who shut the door, lit a cigar, and got deals done. Anyways, carry on with conference realignment ...
