Slive's visit to College Station

In reading the ESPN analysis of today's developments, these three paragraphs caught my eye:
If Slive had already said he didn't plan to raid the ACC for possible expansion of the SEC, and teams such as Kansas and Missouri wouldn't make geographic sense or bring real value to the league, the next step would be to protect the SEC as it is - and the best way to protect it would be to keep these mega conferences from forming.
quote:I wonder if Slive's trip to the aTM campus could have been a twofold trip. One to discuss the possibility of the Aggies coming into the SEC, but also to try to convince the board of regents and the Aggie athletic dept. to do as much as they could to keep the BigXII together.
An NCAA source with direct knowledge of what occurred told ESPN.com that the aggressiveness of the Pac-10 caused various factions of the collegiate sports world to coalesce. They then worked to slow and try to stop the pace of moves that would have left a number of schools searching for a new conference home.
The source said the people involved were business executives, conference commissioners, athletic directors, network executives with ties throughout college athletics, administrators at many levels throughout the NCAA membership and a "fair number of them without a dog in the hunt."
According to the source, this collection of interested and influential people made phone calls, visited in person and held conference calls with the Big 12 schools that were being pursued, including Texas, as well as Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe. The influential group also helped broker the new television deal between Texas (and the other schools considering leaving the conference) and Beebe, who represented the remaining Big 12 schools.

I have a feeling we will be talking about this for 10 more years until the next re-alignment.

I posted this story earlier. It makes sense that Slive and some others didn't want the Big 10 and the Pac 10 to become two super conferences.
Mike Slive winning the realignment game
Now this new story seems to support that a lot of influential people, probably including Slive, worked to keep the Pac 10 and Big 10 from trying to take over.
Influential group saved Big 12

one thing is certain, If it wasn't for Slive A&M (along with the Bigs from the South) would be in the Pac-16 right now.
and that is for God Danged sure.

it makes alot of sense, several months ago when the rumors of these changes started slive said the SEC had no intentions of expanding.

I've thought this all along. Slive seemed to insinuate early on, that the SEC wouldn't be proactive, but rather reactive, yet with a well thought out contingency plan, for varying scenarios, as they emerged.
SEC as king, didn't need to make bold moves, but rather stave off any overly game-changing Big-10 or Pac-10 moves.
And even should the Big-10 go to 16, and each school make a mint, OSU is the lone title threat up there this past decade. Talent not dollars wins titles.
As outside of the OSU and SEC, only warm weathered schools, FSU, Mia, VT, USC, Tex, and OU have really threatened..small flirtation by WVU..and arguably U-Dub and Oregon back in early '00s. BCS Hardware of late, is won by speedy southern defenses and depth levels.
Big-10 schools already have money, facilities, stadiums, educations,etc..just don't see how more schools earning more money, guarantees an increase in hardware up there.
Everyone loves John Facenda's voice, but not frozen tundras. Hard sell if you're not from up there.

Sounds almost like slive was bluffing Tx with the A&M offer.

Makes sense. We were part of a contingency plan if Texas went to the Pac, which would explain why Billy Liucci swore we had "other options," but the primary goal was to keep the BigXII together.
I'm sure Slive could be a rather helpful ally and strategist when it comes to renegotiating TV contracts.

Yeah. Methinks we (A&M and other Texas schools) owe Mr. Slive some thanks when the new TV contracts are inked.

Slive wasn't bluffing s*hit, I guarantee A&M had an invite from the SEC..

I think so too. The invite was definitely legit. But, I do think it was reactive, not proactive. I think Slive and the SEC weren't looking to poach, should the Big-12, or any other conference remain viable and intact.
Slive and SEC just weren't gonna allow the Pac-10 to have UT, OU, and ATM freely, without our competing selljob.
Just my opinion.

The Pac 10 and Texas raised and the SEC went all in. Texas folded and the SEC retained supremacy.

that sounds about right.

I'm sure this was all hatched in the devious mind of Mr. Delaney of the Big-10, but it sounds like there are some very powerful people that have grown tired of Mr. Delaney's machinations. Maybe we'll see a playoff in my lifetime after all.

it really only failed because of the SEC being a serious offer to A&M IMO - otherwise the lot of them would have gone to the PAC
Big 10 probably still adds teams over the next year or two max - probably ND, but if not them then MU, Rutgers, Maryland or other willing participants
