Maybe. But name an experienced HC who has had as much success as Richt that Texas legitimately has a shot at? Contrary to what Texas fans might think, guys like Saban, Meyer, Miles, Harbaugh aren't pissing all over themseleves for the chance to coach in Austin. For the last few years we've seen school after school (Tenn., USC, ND, Neb. etc) throw out these "pie in the sky" names only to end up making a "underwhelming" hire.

Instead of naming someone who has had more success, how bout use your brain and name someone that would do a better job. Coaching decisions aren't made on paper by listing achievements. What do you think Gus Malzahn and James Franklin would do at Georgia with all that talent, money etc?

I'm using my brain to throw out the name of a realistic candiate who seems to fit what UT is looking for, a successful, experienced HC with "skins on the wall." I think both Franklin and Malzahn would be very good hires. Probably better hires than Richt. However, Malzahn isn't even going to consider leaving AU in the middle of NC game preps, and Texas seems to be aiming much higher than Franklin. This again brings me back to my previous point. Guys like Franklin and Malzahn may very well be better coaches than Richt, but that doesn't mean shite if they don't fit what Texas is looking for. Thus, the reason for throwing Richt's name out there

And I wasn't saying that they will be the hire or they are the best choices. I am saying who in their right mind would hire Richt at Texas? If he can't win a championship at Georgia, he can't do it at Texas. He shouldn't even be in consideration. One of the top jobs in the country. You can't hire someone just because they used to win SEC championships.

I like Richt, but I've always said this -- Mack Brown is Mark Richt with a ring.

I bet Will Muschamp wishes he would've kept that coach in waiting gig now.

I agree w/ you on Richt. I'm not sure why his name doesn't come up in more searches.
He seems to fit the criteria they are looking for. Maybe a fresh start would give him some new life?

I think Coach O gets the nod in that group. Didn't fit the goofy good ole boy club at Ole Miss which I applaud him for. Houston nutt won the following year with Orgeron's recruits.
Recruited the hell out of USC with only 10 scholly's a year and took over and proved himself as a head coach by winning the Pac 12 Coach of the year, won over his team and actually had Louisiana people pulling for the USC to do well. He's one of ours.

if I were UT I'd put in a call to Mark Richt

The downside to Richt is that he doesn't know when to cut an assistant coach loose. His buddy Willie Martinez completely killed any defensive mojo that Brian Van Gorder built in the early/mid-2000s, and once they finally got WM out the door, the defense had zero ability to keep up with the offensive stars that Richt and Mike Bobo excel at identifying and developing.

As for Todd Grantham, same song, second verse. You can cite youth on defense all day long, but when one of the players on the secondary came back home from the NFL, he told the guys currently on the team that the pro playbook isn't nearly as complicated as Grantham's. Any of you that watched a UGA game this year would have recognized that on any given defensive play, the players were looking to the sidelines for Grantham's call, and all together looked 100% lost. They were good enough in HS to have been recruited by most of the top programs, so their fundamentals were sound. Something is happening when they get to Athens to make them go brain dead. I'd give you a kid or two, just for the sake of argument, but when it's your entire defense, something's gotta give.

Richt hasn't been good at evaluating defensive coaching staff since BVG went to the Falcons.

ETA: I don't think Richt has too many seasons left in him. The constant scrutiny by the media and the fan base here in GA seem to be weighing heavily on him. It'd be even more of a circus in Austin. I fully expected him to hang it up after this season, and that was well before the injury bug rose up and smote the offense. He just doesn't have the same spark on the sidelines that he used to. This season, however, he had a bit more passion and emotion during the games, but I don't know if that was a byproduct of having to gut through this year's attrition on what had been our strong suit going into a year when we were to be a contender for the MNC.
