Let's look at this logically.

We've given him a rough list of expectations as interim. He's hit most if not all depending on your expectations with Bama. He's continued to recruit very well, with chances to not only hold this current class, but possibly gain a few more anti-miles recruits. We know he's a huge Aranda supporter and will give him the keys to the defensive car...perhaps something that a new coach may not. He's committed to changing the offense with a new OC. He's responded to almost all feedback that was given beforehand...and perhaps not "opened" up the offense, but certainly allowed the coaches to do their job. He's learned from Miles mistakes.

I don't see why (if he doesn't shite the bed) he doesn't deserve a chance for a two year contract. If he can't get things going but keeps recruiting well, no harm - no foul. We look for another coach...perhaps some of the diamond in the rough outliers are now ready at that point.

But...if he does well...if he continues to win and recruit...just like now...well, c'est si bon...

If we don't give him a chance - recruiting could suffer, Aranda could leave sooner, and perhaps the new coach just isn't able to pull if off...then...we are screwed, leaving everyone to second guess us...in the media...again...

Because we're not in the business of giving people a chance!

Also, on your proposal of a short contract: "hey recruits, we don't trust this guy to give him a real contract but you should lock yourself up here for 4 years...". Yeah, that makes sense.

Tiger Stadium at night
125 yards
6 first downs
0 points

That was his chance.

Say own a huge company. Say you lose your CEO for whatever reason. Do you just hire some low level manager cause they love the company??

First, the word "chance," a program like LSU should be hiring a known quantity, someone with experience building and maintaining a program. They shouldn't be taking a "chance." (Granted, any hire is a "chance," but there are measurements and factors that can be used to determine who presents the least risk, and is the least "roll of the dice.")

Most O fans don't but I'll bite.

quote:

Who is "we" and where is this list?

quote:

We know he's a huge Aranda supporter and will give him the keys to the defensive car...perhaps something that a new coach may not.

This only comes into play if we hire a defensive coach. Any offensive coach keeps Aranda.

quote:

He's committed to changing the offense with a new OC.

Where is the list of candidates that O can likely pull from?

quote:

He's responded to almost all feedback that was given beforehand...and perhaps not "opened" up the offense, but certainly allowed the coaches to do their job. He's learned from Miles mistakes.

O has marketed himself well, yes. How do you measure "learning from mistakes?" What are the specifics to that?

quote:

I don't see why (if he doesn't shite the bed) he doesn't deserve a chance for a two year contract. If he can't get things going but keeps recruiting well, no harm - no foul. We look for another coach...perhaps some of the diamond in the rough outliers are now ready at that point.

So if you have to hire a coach that you are giving a 2 year contract to because you're not sure if you can trust his capability long term, then you already doing it wrong. And you've failed.

quote:

But...if he does well...if he continues to win and recruit...just like now...well, c'est si bon...

This can be said for literally every hire.

quote:

If we don't give him a chance - recruiting could suffer, Aranda could leave sooner, and perhaps the new coach just isn't able to pull if off...then...we are screwed, leaving everyone to second guess us...in the media...again...

All of these are maybes, none of these are certain.

Look, here's one simple question: Do you expect to hear in 3+ years, if O were retained as head coach, "Man, this is a great year. We have some of the best coaching talent in play for the playoffs this year. Better coaches than we've ever seen. Saban. Harbaugh. Meyer. Orgeron."

Do you really think that O is long time, top class head coaching material with the likes of the above? You're probably going to say yes, but

quote:

I don't see why (if he doesn't shite the bed) he doesn't deserve a chance for a two year contract.

Already tells me no. O is not that kind of coach.

a two year contract will hurt recruiting. the new coach needs a 4 year deal. I agree with the gist of your post but it depends on jimbo and hermans response to our offer. imo, herman is our best bet with jimbo being right there.

however, I like O a lot and part of me would be proud and happy if he gets the job. it's only football. I like LSU better than I like LSU football.

in any event, I will be pulling for LSU and whomever the coach is.

Give him a chance? Seriously? A bad couple years can destroy a program for years to come. Two year contract? That's a great way to get recruits to sign in for four years.

LSU isn't a place you give chances. Should O get a CHANCE?? I agree...go to Purdue, Houston, or one of the soon to be open lower tier jobs and prove yourself. Let's talk in another 8-10 years if so.

Why though

We win these games any ways

Ridiculous

Had he beat Bama maybe but even had he ran the table I still prefer a better HC

THIS IS LSU my goodness

It's not worth saving a recruiting class, even top coaches, to have to put up with another incompetent coach.

As for being screwed, why? If LSU wants Coach O, you can have him anytime you want. It doesn't work out with Jimbo or Herman, no problem, just go get O from whatever d-line job he has and make him head coach.

If LSU fricks over Jimbo again, he will never consider coming here later. Not to mention the fact that top coaches are not going to consider LSU if they see them making hires like this and going cheap.

This really is a program defining decision. If LSU hires O, it's all over as far as this program being a national powerhouse. It's back to the Dinardo days at best.

Seriously? You can't be this clueless.

If you want him that's on you but a two year contract? What's the rational for this? Is it because you know in the back of your mind it is very possible he is mediocre or worse once the emotion and script flipping' wears off.

Yeah - a two year contract will do wonders for recruiting and hiring assistants.

I expect LSU to be a top tier program. O isn't a top tier coach. Period. He's a GREAT recruiter. He's a good defensive line coach (I think?).

Career d-line coach. Horrible failure in his only stent as a HC. Yeah, sounds like a great idea.

The O contingent annoys me more than the pro-Miles contingent. At least the Miles sycophants had a record of success to point to.

O has an elite skillset for teaching defensive linemen and recruiting. He's not really cut out to be a head coach.

Dude's one of the best there has ever been teaching his position, though. I'll never take that away from him. Look at the names he's had under him.

This is the most retarded thing brought up by the most dimwitted of the Ogrerites. Two year contract would be a disaster for recruiting and it shows the world that the AD has no confidence in his ability to sustain the program. If that is the case then why F*)LJLG hire the guy in the first place!! So short sighed over emotional folks are running around and inside LSU right now who are doing their best to torpedo the long term. Insanity!!!!
