To me, Les actually loves LSU. He thinks the world of this place and realizes that LSU = Les Miles' gravy train. As long as he wins, he'll be rich beyond belief and can retire here a legend of things progress as they are. So, in order to leave, he had to be guaranteed something from UMich: a job offer. He never got one, nor the assurance that he would get one, so he said "screw you, I'm staying here."
