???

Not a troll admins! Real thread here!

So this dude Joey McGuire went to UT-Arlington well after they'd shut their program down, so he obviously didn't play football in college.

Then he didn't even start coaching in high school until he was 25 years old. DLine coach, then DB coach for 7 years after that. Finally gets a head coaching HS job at age 33 and has a great run. Fine.

Breaks into college coaching at age 47, tight ends coach, then defensive ends coach, then OLB's

then he gets the head coaching job at Texas Tech?? What am I missing?

If they were going to go that route, they should have just hired Garret Riley and hope that some of what his brother has rubbed off on him.

Connected in the Texas High Schools. I think they did it for recruiting and then get good coordinators like the Coach O model...... wait a minute.

I agree. Not a fan of these High School Harrys as head coaches. Recruiting ace? Sure. Not the head job.

Very few of them are ever coordinators, because they are brought into college as recruiters and liaisons to the high school coaches.

Certainly, it CAN work out. Extremely risky. Texas Tech could've done much better.

the AD Hocutt at Texas Tech is an idiot, not just on this hire, but other decisions.

For one firing Wells a few weeks ago the Monday before the OU game. Forget the team had a winning record this year at 5-3, if you're still going to fire him given that, at least give him the OU game to see what they can do before they get an open date the week after.

Hocutt is a douchebag

I think they think they've somehow got "the next Art Briles" or something

except Briles' resume in his early career compared to this dude is glaringly better

They are thinking Jeff Traylor.

He was coaching high school in 2014 and does not have any coordinator experience in college.

He has UTSA 9-0 right now.

At Cedar Hill, McGuire took on a program that had not recorded a winning season in years and had never won a playoff game. As head coach from 2003 through 2016, McGuire went 141-42 and led the Longhorns to four state-championship games, winning in 2006, 2013 and 2014 and finishing runner-up in 2012. His teams won seven district titles, nine bi-district championships, and appeared in the playoffs in 12 straight years.

He can probably put together a good squad based off his connections in the state.

I guess, except Traylor played in college and his charismatic arse could sell salt water to the Ancient Mariner

these high school legend HC kind of hires have only worked twice, Briles and Traylor, that I can remember

I've lost a bunch of brain cells though

that's true Cap, but really, how many high school "legends" do you know who weren't really good at cheating the system in high school? Almost all of them, the "geniuses", break rules and recruit, public or private

I'll bet Cedar Hill opponents have some different opinions of why he was successful

here's a picture of Cedar Hill coming onto the field a year ago. Tell me all those kids just happened to go to Cedar Hill on accident

I’ve been on the rant long enough to know playing in college doesn’t matter. Look at all the CFB experts who post here. Lol

you're out of your element here donny. mcguire is every bit a smooth as traylor and just as respected statewide. he was a very well known member of the texas high school coach's association. he's a good coach and better recruiter. unconventional? yes, but i feel like this is a great hire

It absolutely matters. Just giving the effort to be a walkon and get the shite beat out of you in practice is the price of admission.

Playing a different sport in college has my respect as well

bullshite

and it's not high school coach's jobs to steer kids to a certain school, or most often when that happens anyway, it's a mistake of evaluating talent versus Bubba gladhanding Bubba and making a mistake signing a kid who's not up to par

It's my opinion that you are out of your element

Tech is notoriously cheap. Lubbock is like living in Witness Protection. You move there, and you're instantly forgotten about.

No idea if they’re all from CH but that area has been loaded with talent for years with CH, DeSoto, Duncanville, and Lancaster all separated by a few miles.

You could say Gus but at least he somewhat climbed the college coaching ladder from OC to HC.
