If they suck on defense again can he blame it on DC Derek Mason and use him as a scapegoat then hire his replacement?

"I've decided to absorb the responsibilities of the defensive coordinator position into my own. I've realized that if you wanna get something done right, you've gotta do it yourself. So, I'm gonna be breaking through the wall of the office that would have been the defensive coordinator's and make one huge enormous office. However, I will only be taking eighty five percent of the additional salary I'm entitled to. And that is self sacrifice people."

This is a horrible idea. I could see him hiring a young DC and being the defensive play caller, but it's ridiculous for a head coach to have all of the responsibility.

i don't really see it as a big deal. petrino called / calls all his offensive plays the OC is in name only.
