Houston upped his contract to 3.1 million a year. Do you really want to pay 4 plus a buyout to get him? Is he worth that much?
That's what they are offering, he hasn't signed yet and I seriously doubt he'd ever sign it if it included a substantial buy out. UH is a stepping stone job, they know it, they just don't want to lose a guy after just 1 year

I'm in Houston for the holidays and there is a lot of talk about this. I don't understand who LSU wants that is a "proven" winner. You have Saban and Meyer who have won 6 of the last 10, then Miles, Fisher, Mack and Chiz. That is it over the past decade
I like Herman but I don't think he's been in charge of a real program long enough for him to go to a top 10 type job (USC or LSU). He could go to South Carolina and that wouldn't shock me, but a job where they have won a national title since 2000 seems odd

Our program doesn't need a turn around. The talent, facilities, recruiting, fan support, etc. are all there already. It just needs a new staff with a functioning brain.
True, but Herman is still unproven so I wouldn't consider him.. Talent or no talent.

Miles wasn't proven before he came here. He was a poultry 28-21 at OSU. Hardly a home run hire.
I wouldn't take chances whether we scored with Miles or not, but that's just me. I'd rather have someone that has built a program and/or has maintained a winning program for a while..

He's set school/conference records every school he's been at. He's wildly popular with his players. He pulled in Ed Oliver to freaking Houston! Houston! I don't care that's his hometown.
He destroyed Saban's defense in the playoff last year with a fricking 3rd string QB! He took 7-6 Houston to now 10-1 playing for the American Conference Championship. Unproven my arse
The guy is the real deal. We will look stupid for not hiring him.

While he definitely won't sign the new contract unless he stays at Houston, he signed a contract last year that contained a $2.25 million dollar buyout. Since Houston is offering 3.1, it would take something north of that plus the buyout.

Give me 5 options then?
I just don't see as many proven coaches out there as most people seem to

to be fair, if my boss called me into his office today, and i KNEW I had a 15 million dollar severance package, i suspect I would be pretty sanguine about the "meeting"
Not to mention the fact that Les is 62, he's got half his kids out the house and the other two will be gone in the next few years. That's a time in your life when you start playing a lot of golf, buy a big arse fishing boat or a hunting cabin. I think he's set, unless he has a gambling problem or his wife shops like Imelda Marcos.

In
He would be a great hire with our facilities, resources, & talent. He recruits Texas well, is intelligent, studied under Urban, and if don't get he'll end up somewhere that'll hurt us in the long run.

He's going to get offered by UT. The secret is out on this guy and I expect him to go bigger than USC. Arguably, it would be a downgrade going to USCe. Definitely a lateral move.
Houston area is a much better recruiting area. Clemson is the premier program in South Carolina. They're a building a nicer stadium in Houston than Brice-Williams. They're program is now contending in the top 25 compared to USC who just lost to the Citadel. I don't see why Herman would go there. IF anything, he should stay put with a a big extension than going to the dumpster fire in Columbia. Dumpster fire is an honest assessment

Fair enough:
Larry Fedora
Mark Hudspeth
Chip Kelly
Rich Rodrigez
Dave Doeren
Mark Helfrich
Jimbo Fisher
And that's just off of the top of my head.
