Matt Campbell.

Got to thinking about this when the only defense Tucker stans have for wanting to hire done-nothing Tucker is "it worked out last time we hired from MSU!"

No, I don't think Campbell is the next Saban, just thought the numbers were interesting. People tend to act like we knew Saban would be the GOAT when we hired him, but the reality is his resume looks a lot like other people that get pooped on around here.

Coaching record is piece of the puzzle. I also look at positions coached, NFL experience, and prominent coaches someone’s coached under. Does does his coaching acumen benefit LSU? I say yes, he’s similar to Mario Cristobal in this respect.

For the record, I have Matt Campbell in my top 5 over Lane Kiffin and Billy Napier.

I would love a Matt Campbell hire. It would be a home run. I’m shocked he’s not being talked about that much.

Fair points, but on what theory?

You'd think that would manifest itself in the first HC job after all that experience. Saban was the Browns DC after Toledo, but his winning % at Michigan State is almost identical to Matt Campbell's at Iowa State (literally 0.576 vs 0.571).

Do you think the previous experience gives him a higher ceiling/more growth potential forever? Or could some coaches start with a lower floor than others, and the previous experience bridges that gap?

I think he’s mentioned here often.

I’m optimistic that his name hasn’t been “leaked” as a sign of him being the next in line if Scott doesn’t get his #1.

Your questions have alot of variables. What type of previous coaching exp.? What kind of situation are you stepping into; a rebuild? Do you have backing from boosters and administration? Rich recruiting area?

But here’s a Couple things to consider re Saban:

1. The NFL exposes you to a lot. As a NFL coach you are married to your craft. There is no recruiting and politics; it’s just you and your ability to breakdown film and elvaluate players’ strengths/weaknesses. Because of Saban’s vast experience in both the NFL and college. He see’s the game and evaluates players a lot differently than your typical College HC. Saban simply created a NFL-like team in the SEC, and has transformed both the LSU and Alabama administration and booster funding.

2. Saban understood the constraints of playing, recruiting, and winning in the BIG10. He knew that Michigan and Ohio State were always going to have a leg up because of the brand and legacy. He also knew he wouldn’t get the backing from MSU administration to compete against those schools.

Honestly looking at the coaches he has beaten just in the last 2 seasons makes him a very solid hire!

Everyone wants to talk about saban’s 7 national championships and gloss over his 0-4 Michigan state bowl record.

Pathetic.
