I think he could be a serious candidate. He has done a hell of a job at Navy considering the talent level.

Everytime I watch a Navy game the announcers wont stop talking about what a great coach he is.

Dont give me that "you cant run the option in the SEC" He was the OC at Hawaii for 5 years and ran the Hawaii Style ofense.

I have no inside information, no connections, and no influence.

But, I think we'll get someone like him, i.e., someone out of left field. This is Skip's M.O.

No one thought about Miles when Saban left. And, most felt that we had been shortchanged with Miles and that we should have gone after the much bigger name.

Skip will do the same thing this time around -- hire a no-name coach (that has had mediocre success) to a $1.2 million contract, and just hopes that things work out.

I seriously doubt we'll ever see these pie-in-the-sky big name coaches even being interviewed by Skip. It will be a name out of the blue that wasn't prominently mentioned on this site. Brian Kelly, perhaps is about the biggest name that may be considered.

Skip has no say in this hire. He is just collecting a paycheck at this point.

I agree, Saban, Spurrier, Del Rio, Gruden are not leaving and to think otherwise is fricking retarded

The thing is, only people in Baton Rouge and/or ignorant LSU fans would think that Paul Johnson would be a hire 'out of left field'.

They think that if the coach is coaching somewhere outside the traditional confederate boundaries, that they must suck and not have any 'SEC qualifications'.

I also really really like Greg Chiano at Rutgers.

He's being primed to take over for JoePa. If we did hire him, I would want some sort of Miles/Michigan buyout for PSU, but something in the $5-10 million range.

WTF are you talking about?

Being "out of left field" just means that they haven't been prominently mentioned and aren't "big name" coaches -- much like Les Miles in 2004.

And, much like Miles, fans will take a wait-and-see approach before they decide if they like the hire.

You don't think he has more say in this hire than Joe Dean had in the hiring of Saban?

Whatever, Ryan 11. Jack Del Rio's daughter is at LSU, so he's coming.

I really dont like Boise Coaches though. They do well in the Boise system but once they leave they usually have problems, i.e. Dirk Koetter, Nutt, Hawkins.

Coomparing resumes i still like Johnson though.

I do also like Brian Kelly. But I still think Johsnon would be a better hire based onHC experience.

I concur. You might want to add Lincoln, NE to that, as well (with respect to the city/cities you're listing).

For whatever reason, a lot of folks think if the coach is not a part of a big-time national power already, then he obviously isn't qualified or experienced enough to win at a big time program. Paul Johnson took a mediocre, at best, Georgia Southern program and turned it into a 1-AA powerhouse, winning two national championships while he was there. He's taken a downtrodden-to-mediocre-at-best service academy (Navy) and turned it into a consistent winner, having won the last 4 or 5 commander in chief trophies.

I've suggested to Nebraska fans that he would be a very good candidate to coach their team and get them back to being a Big 12 title contender year in and year out and the vast majority respond with "we want somebody we know/somebody familiar with our program" b.s. - i.e. Pelini or Gill. Because we all know Pelini is such a good coach...he's sat in on talented defenses at Oklahoma, in Baton Rouge and the one year in Lincoln he was there is a bit misleading (Nebraska got BOMBED by Mizzou, K State and Texas that year...and Pelini led the team as interim head coach to a win over an iffy Michigan State team in their bowl game).

Paul Johnson is every bit the coach that Jim "the sweater vest" Tressel is, and Tressel was 'nothing more' than the head coach of a perennial 1-AA contender prior to Ohio State.

Everybody focuses on big name coaches. Look at what they've done. John Robinson didn't do squat in his second stint at USC. Albeit it's been but one year, but Saban was less than impressive with the end-of-the-year meltdown at Bama this year. Spurrier hasn't been all that impressive at South Carolina...his record, thus far, is about the same as his predecessor (Holtz) who was another "big name" coach hired to turn a program around.

zcd1976, I couldnt have said it any better. Your dead on with the Tressel reference too.

If you have ever seen a press conference with PJ, he is an impressive guy. I think he woudl be a great fit here.
