What about this guy?

Young enough to have a lot of coaching left - 50.

Offensive mastermind - runs the triple option now, but has stated he would throw a lot more often if he had a good throwing QB.

No ties to big schools - so no threat to leave.

Has had good success as a head coach.

Scary to think what he would do with all of our running backs and RP.

Doubts:

Can he recruit?

Would he be able to adjust his offense enough to be successful?

My first choice would be Peterson from Boise State before Johnson at Navy. Peterson would make for one exciting offensive team and he would bring a good DC.

I like Petersen as well.

Just throwing a name out of a potential candidate.

I think your suggestion has already been picked up in Navy circles. Just got an email "Keep your hands off our Johnson."

Johnson won 2 NC's in Div 1-AA, Ga Southern. was also on staff there when the program started up in the early 80's, not sure if he was an assistant when they were winning 3 or 4 NC's during the late 80's.

With his style of offense, he was the one I thought would be perfect for the Nebraska job. Someone who could get them back to the kind of offense they were used to. For some reason, it never caught steam.

I thought the exact same thing about Nebraska! They seem bent on getting a defensive coach though!

He's a great bush league coach, but no defensive mind as of late.

Too many coaches in this day and age STILL putting all of their very best talent on Offense in my opinion.

Johnson's next job will logically be in the MAC or WAC, not the SEC or Big 12. Again, just my opinion.

All Notre Dame fans think very highly of him. I like him as a head coach. I still wonder what would have happened with Nebraska if they hired him a few years ago.

Yes, he was on Russell's staff when Ga. Southern was dominating 1-AA in the late 80s.

Not sure if his offensive philosophy would fly at LSU. He is limited at Navy due to personnel available. At GSU he ran a spread option but it was still very heavy run.
