When’s the last time a long term head coach failed and went back to a coordinator role with any modicum of success? Those guys aren’t working on their craft or staying up to date when they’re the CEO of a program and doing everything involved with trying to succeed there.

Bobby Petrino was a badass offensive mind for many years and even he couldn’t keep it going after years of being a head coach, I certainly don’t see G5 flash in the pan Scott Frost bucking that trend.

I don’t think he’s a bad HC honestly. I just think he and Nebraska weren’t a good fit. Even though he was a legendary player there.

Long term may be the sticking point but Kiffin and Sark come to mind.

It would feel like a risk. Frost’s success as an FBS OC was in 2013-15, so it’s been a while. His best work was at UCF, but that offense obviously didn’t translate well to Nebraska.

All that said, it doesn’t mean things won’t work out. It just doesn’t seem like a no-brainer choice.

Dude was lazy as frick at Nebraska and damn near burned every bridge he had there.

Went from hero to zero in no time.

I'd take him as an analyst first and see if he really wants to coach again.

Happens all the time in the NFL. I guess "long-term" HC is a little different though.

7-win Steve did this and is now the HC of Texas and in the playoffs.

He has a thin resume as an OC. He was only an OC for 3 years.

If somehow we could get him to come in and only coach running plays, and leave Sloan in charge of the passing plays and QBs then that would be awesome

This " the game has passed him by" or "he's out of date" is such a crock of shite. Y'all try to make football way more complicated than it is. As if the concepts of jet sweep motion or route combinations are so deep only a few chosen few can crack the code. Football is actually pretty simple. If it wasn't, the semi-literate jocks playing it would never grasp it.

He also slid into that role because he was already on staff, and Helfrich was promoted to HC after Kelly left. It's not like Oregon's offense needed much help back then either.

I'd be wary about hiring him.
