Mike Elko is expected to be named new DC at Notre Dame
quote:

It looks like there is a new defensive coordinator at Notre Dame and his name is Mike Elko. Irish247 and 247Sports analyst Josh Newberg have learned that the former Wake Forest defensive coordinator is expected to accept the same position with the Fighting Irish. As 247Sports's Steve Wiltfong said it would be, we're told it is a three-year deal, although we're waiting additional confirmation on that.

I am not familiar with Mike Elko's history. I read he was responsible for a top twenty defense nationally in 2016. A rarity at Wake Forest.

This is actually a really good hire. Wake's defenses have been stout.

Surprised he wants to work for Kelly.

Very successful DC, considering his opponents had his playbook.

Very good hire. Heard Oregon was trying to lure him before they got Leavitt.

Dudes my cousin, he basically worked his way up the coaching ladder. Upenn->fordam->richmond->bowling green->wake and now nd. His defenses are fun to watch, very aggressive and lots of turnovers. He has been with clawson for 12 years, nice to see him get out on his own. Hopefully this leads to a hc for him.

Great choice! I predicted him to ND. He's going to be a great fit. Might actually save Kelly's job

Home run hire for them, one of the more underrated DC's out there,

Kelly is a dead man walking, if not after the playoffs this year, then certainly after 2017.

Kelly is already looking for a job with ND's knowledge, as everyone agrees he's in over his head. But he's too big of an a-hole, wholly bereft of character as a human being, in addition to being a totally incompetent football coach, to find any where to employ him.

Predictably, he doesn't have the decency to resign and crawl back to his small-time community college roots. Based on his behavior at ND, his obstinate behavior isn't a surprise.

ND is searching for a new AD and a new head coach at the same time right now. The 400 million invested in the Crossroads project cannot be sustained by 4-8 and the worst historical football performance in over a century.

Elko is a rare exception and appears to be a really good coach. He can come to ND for a year and should perform well for himself, with much better talent and exposure than his prior stops. He can move on to other top jobs when Kelly is fired.

But Brian Kelly's grab-bag spread offense may hang him out to dry next year though.

Kelly cannot get anyone worth hiring to work or play for him because the word is out. In the last week or so, Kelly lost both starting QBs and his OC left became a head coach. All 3 left because Kelly doesn't give any coordinator autonomy to deviate from his gay-arse "spread principles" offense. The OC was far better experienced professionally from his time at Boise State and he developed Kizer last season before Kelly ruined him (e.g. Fiesta Bowl and all this year).

Kelly is so reviled by his own players, neither QB told Brian Kelly personally they were leaving and he found out through the media.

I'd be curious to know his thoughts on how long he expects Kelly to be there, honestly.

Should be a better opportunity for him, in terms of talent and exposure, regardless and I hope he continues moving upward, with Brian Kelly's offense and personality as a speed bump along the way.
