I keep reading his name as a possibility for USC or the NFL eventually. Am I missing something? One third place finish in the SECW in his first year. His teams have regressed/failed to meet expectations in every year since. Not sure why he's still considered a hot candidate for other jobs when it doesn't even seem like his job security at TAMU should be a certainty.

I'm praying that someone bails us out of that contract, like USC did with Washington making the Sark hire.

His buyout is the remainder of the contract...or $20 million if he's fired after 2015.

No way he's fired after this year.

Purdue might want to take his contract off your hands in 2017 though.

Our athletic department doesn't believe in "termination options".

True, but the new norm in coaching contracts are for fully guaranteed contracts. At least on the first go around.

That said, I know i'm a Purdue fan and we suck....but where was TAMU before Sumlin got there? Even though he's not competing for Natty's he still has elevated that program, whereas your previous coaches basically had 1 good year and then crashed and burned.

He won with great offensive lineman, recruited by his predecessor, Mike Sherman.

He's doing better than Franchione or Sherman, but there really isn't much of an upward trend (of course, it doesn't help that he won 12 games in his first season). Even without a buyout I think he'd be worth holding onto for 1 more year.

How much of that was Sumlin and how much of that was JFF plus the SEC brand?

There is no way we will fire him after this year. I honestly think we could lose to Western Carolina and we still wouldn't bite that buyout. If he goes 8-4 again next year though there will be a lot of heat on him. The lack of adjustments and total mid season collapse of the last two years is unacceptable

That said if USC comes calling for him after this year (I doubt it happens at this point) I hope we would just let him go. He's already overpaid as shite and the thought of us giving him more money and a bigger buyout would have me reconsidering what to do with my Saturdays in the fall

IMO, I feel it has more to do with the culture of football in TX. Until you guys embrace power running, you will never win. Strong tried to change the culture, but had kick back from high schools.

I don't remember the kickback with Strong and high schools on his offensive system

Our biggest problem on offense has been developing OL talent since Sherman left. There is plenty of good OL talent in the state of TX every year, we've just done a shitty job of signing and developing it under Sumlin

High school football in Texas is def. an issue for recruiting good defensive players. My alma mater (Tivy H.S. in now 5A) is undefeated and won their last game 71 to 57. Even good teams don't have shite for defense. The culture of Texas high school football is all about that offense.

He's the most overrated and overpaid coach in the country.
