The problems in '06-'07 were due to a lack of talent in the secondary, which we "fixed" somewhat by the end of the year in '07. By the UK games and the SEC Title game against you guys we were starting Berry, Rogan (True Freshmen) Willingham (1st Yr JUCO xfer) along with Jonathan Hefney. The Nickleback was Brent Vinson, also a true freshman. I think it was for that reason that we played WAY more zone than we typically do. In '05 we played a ton of man, but in '06 and '07 we played a bunch of Cover 3 and Regular Cover 2.
We played a little more man this season, but not as much as '95-'05. There were also talent issues on the DL in '06 with Justin Harrell being injured for the season, J.T. Mapu returning from his Mormon mission out of shape, and Turk McBride suffering from random injuries throughout the year. For a lot of the season, Walk-on Matt McGlothlin actually started... until DeMonte Bolden and Dan Williams finally came along.
That being said, I don't think they adjusted well early on in '07 as we got embarrassed vs. Cal, UF and Bama. But I did appreciate the way certain guy developed over the course of that season.

It's not in front of me, so I can't quote it chapter and verse. But you can't just look at the talent - you have to look at what kind of talent was actually on the field. My recollection is that one of the years you cite involved a very low number of returning starters, something like 3 or 4. Perhaps a Vol poster can back me on that. But young talent is just that - young. Just ask Charlie Strong about his 2007 crew at UF.
And I believe some significant injury issues played roles in those numbers as well. I know 1st rounder Justin Harrell only played 3 games the last year he was at TN. The Phil Steele guide, for what that's worth, has a blurb stating that TN had 12 players in walking boots after the 2007 South Carolina game. And if you look at the game-by-game numbers, the TN defensive numbers fall off a cliff after that game.
Again, this is strictly from memory. So any UT posters, or anyone with their 08 Steele guides handy, feel free to call me out. But long/short, there's a lot more that goes into the final defensive rankings than a) who's the DC and b) what talent is listed in the program.

I'm not saying this to try and ruffle feathers, but I honestly don't think you guys will get Orgeron. I think it's either Tennessee or New Orleans for old Yaw Yaw.
But I could be wrong. It's been known to happen in the past. What I've been hearing, though, strongly suggests he will be a Vol.
We have been hearing the opposite
Vols not in the picture..his family ain't moving

offer is still out for Orgeron, he and his agent are just playing games on the final numbers...still could be possibly playing for a raise with the saints...we shall see, and yes the backup plan if he backs out

Slam dunk imo.
left hand layup in traffic in mine
half court desperation shot...bricks on the backboard, rolls around the rim and plops in the net...to barely beat the team known as malleveto

here is thier recruiting rankings since 02
02 2
03 18
04 11
05 4
06 23 (with 22 signies)
07 3
08 not even ranked
compare that with:
04 2
05 22
06 7
07 4
08 11
i would say we have cosdiderably more talent. Especially since alot of their 22 ranked full of three stars is actually starting (they had 22 schollys given that year). We have recruited top ten talent every year. Maybe i am just trying to make myself feel better. Many of the players that have played with him that are now in the nfl say he is the best coach they have ever been with. I remember a link that drexyl had the was quit impresive.

Is Les Miles still the head coach?
If so, Alleva has not addressed the problem.

Coach O was not the problem, safeties were the biggest problem on defense. Ellis developed very well as a rookie and you have to give Coach O credit for that.

would you say those rankings are considerably higher on average than Chavis' defensive unit rankings during that time period?
