It isn't the top of my list, but I think he will do well.

A lot of people think he is the next Muschamp, but I disagree. Different personality, he has spent a lot more time learning from Nick Saban.

he has been his DC for 9 years. He has been patient waiting for the right job. I think this is it, and I think he would do fine.

In the end it depends on him getting a good OC. There are a few names out there we could go nab. Doug Meachum at TCU makes $300K a year. Just for starters.

Who took Steele's job?

a 35 year old Kirby Smart.

We aren't hiring any coordinator with no HC experience at LSU, so it's a pointless discussion. Way too much risk in exchange for Miles. This will have to be a big time hire.

May be... Economically good choice and better than a retread HC.

I say we go for a proven big time name and if we miss, go the asst coach route.

Goddammit for the last time: LSU is not hiring someone without HC experience. Tom Herman is the lowest candidate that they'llou consider.

Smart has been passed up for half a dozen jobs over the past few seasons. There's a reason for that. He is not HC material.

The guy is 39.

He is also smart enough to know whats a good job, and whats a job that he cannot succeed at.

Exactly

While the hire wouldn't surprise me, that's not happening. This LSU team has the talent on the roster today to draw out a current HC.

For a school like UCF, Memphis, Houston or Southern Miss (if any of those jobs open up)? Yes. For a school like UGA, LSU, or Bama (if any of those jobs open up)? No.

In order to justify the Miles firing, it will have to be a big name current college head coach. JMO

If he would be such a good hire, when hasn't Bama committed to him for when Nick retires?

Coaches who took over big programs with no HC experience:

Chip Kelly at Oregon
Patterson at TCU
Richt at UGA
Mullen at MSU (not really a "big" program, but an SEC job)
Shaw at Stanford
Fisher at FSU

It happens and often times - if it is the right hire for the right situation - it is very successful. Jimbo had been at FSU for a while so it eased the transition. Shaw grew up at Stanford where his dad coached, so he knew the culture well. Kelly had been OC at Oregon and Patterson had been DC at TCU. They knew the environment.
