Not trying to insult him, but face facts that Tampa 2 defense is from the mind of Tony Dungy not Monte Kiffin. Another factor just how complex is the Tampa 2? Will this be another Lou Tepper situation, where the defense was too time consuming to be properly run by college students?

hopefully just good enough to take something away from UF and UGA but nothing away from us.

Tampa has had a good defense forever. Nice try on the spin job though.

I think you need to dig a bit more. Kiffin played a key role in the development of the Tampa 2.

I still wonder why people think that defense will be so dominant in college football.

Very good.

If you haven't noticed, Tampa's defense hasn't exactly lost a step since Dungy left.

like i said, not being disrespectful to the man. but they are valid questions, its been years since he coached at the college level. I did alittle reading up on the Tampa 2 and its not really very complex. Its based mostly, utilizing the speed of the defense and being very agressive. Someone earlier in this thread said Monte along with Tony Dungy developed this defense and they are wrong. In fact Dungy said that he laughs when he hears Tampa 2. He says it was developed in the 70's by Chuck Noll and Bud Carson.LINK

Nevermind that Kiffin is like 20 years his senior and probably influenced nearly every, if not EVERY single idea he has regarding how that defense operates...

How about this...

Take a look at how the Colts defense has been rated every year since Dungy got there... and then look at how Tampa's has been rated every year since he's been gone.

Tell me who's better...

Tampa has a great defense (usually), but you need great players to run their scheme

Detroit ran the Tampa 2

It will be great if you have the right players, if not it will get destroyed.

You didn't watch Tampa at the end of this season. Kiffin was probably gone whether his son got the UT job or not.

That being said I think he is a good hire.

Depends how you play it, like any defense.

Basically, it is a modified cover 2, but the middle LB as responsibility for the space between the two safeties (not always deep responsibility).

Pressuring the QB is the responsibility of the 4 D-linemen. Two speedy DEs, 1 DT that plays 1-gap (think Sapp) and one DT that plays almost like a nose tackle in a 3-4...he job it to clog up the line.

It can be passive or aggressive, complex or simple. Again, it all depends on the coaching style, philosophy, and personal. Since getting QB pressure with mainly the front 4, personal can be an issue.

TB has more money invested in D

Indy has more money invested in O

Indy's D is the tampa 2.5 on a budget
