They are waiting for Lesticles to finish the season. No other reason a program of Michigan's status is taking so long to fill the spot. Mile's can honestly say at this point he will be the coach at LSU next year. As far as he knows he will. But things can change and I for one think they will.

I wish this post was all that you wrote.

First, it is Miles not Mile's. Second, Miles didn't say he would be LSU's coach next year he said he would be LSU's coach next season (see the release on LSUSPORTS.net). If you are so into semantics you should appreciate the difference.
Third, UM has offered the jobs to at least 1 other coach (Schiano) and been spurned by another (Ferentz). It is not as if they have been sitting back and thinking "Miles said no on Dec. 1 but he might say yes on Jan. 8."
A little reading goes a long way.

They made Schiano an offer that even you would turn down....

I read that it was $2.2 mil. I'll take that.
Moreover,if Schiano was interested he could have made a counteroffer. Most negotiations feature them.

So is Bobby Bowden. The point is that there is an actual search going on no matter how disorganized it may be. It is not a pack of guys in smoking jackets in Bill Martin's office saying, Oh, well, January 8th or bust."

Follow the Michigan Blogs for a few hours. They are searching high and low and speaking with many people. They are also disorganized and lack experience with football coaching searches. They haven't had to survey the market or hire out of their own ranks in 40 years or so. It is apparent to me that, because of their lack of experience, they should have hired a search firm. Instead they are muddling through the process in-house.
They will probably hire someone from their own staff, such as Ron English. This really is their pattern. That is also why there is such a big Miles-to-Michigan-mafia, because they view Miles as an insider. But Miles was also viewed as not inside or loyal enough by folks in their AD who strongly opposed him.
However, because their fanbase is so tired of their inside coaching staff, they are locked in internal conflict. It will be very difficult for them to settle on any single candidate.
As for some of their fans holding out for Miles on January 8, 2008, that is a product of mental illness.

Allegedly Petrino called UM but UM wasn't interested (for better or worse).

For better. UM values long term stability. You can find a top level coach to give you that and still compete for NCs. Petrino does not give you that.
I think UM's next call should be to Chris Petersen. I know he is not a big name HC in a BCS conference but neither was Tressel (sorry), Meyer or Stoops. I think Petersen would lead UM well for 20+ years.
