This is the first time I've heard this guy's name even mentioned. I find it highly suspect that this is true. Probably his agent angling for more money or some Bama fan floating out there.

Certainly could be the case. It worked enough last year when LSU was searching to get Shoop a good raise. A quick search on the Auburn page on SEC Rant has a few dozen references to him in early December, including:
