He does carry question marks on being able to captain a ship.

When saban hired him he said there were things he wasn't good at and bama wouldn't ask him to do them.

I suspect Kiffin wanted a minimal buyout and Houston wanted a guy who might want to stay more than one year. Even if Kiffin had marginal success at UH next season, there's no doubt he would be exploring every possibility of getting out ASAP. Applewhite is more of a risk, but he also probably gives you a better chance of stability

If I were Houston I don't know if I'd want to pay someone 2-3 mill per year who EVERYONE knows wants to leave at the first chance available

Heard on a radio show yesterday UH was talking a 20 million dollar buyout for Kiffin. They're pretty hot about Herman leaving, don't want it to happen again.

I also heard it's buyout issues. However, Bruce F said Major has been in the state of Texas for a long time and that may have helped.

Nah kiffin's record as a head coach ruined the deal

Most likely two massive parts of it, imo. Being burned by Herman, UH wants a big buyout which Kiffin would hate due to Power 5 aspirations. The reception Texas high school coaches would have to LK is a massive question mark where as MA has been recruiting Texas for quite sometime and is a household name in the state.

UH absolutely worshiped Herman. A creative offensive mind with an emphasis on defense first. They want to keep the train rolling and I'd have to believe that they felt Major and whatever is behind that massive forehead can replicate what Herman did there, similar to what Orgeron has taken and will attempt to replicate from Pete Carroll at LSU.

Not saying I "heard" one thing or another, but just common sense tells me that.

UH feels they should be a Power Five school. Kiffin is a huge risk. Not just a W-L risk, but a personality risk. If Kiffin wants to be a HC, he probably needs to go a step below Houston first.

Major is a W-L risk, but the people at UH know him, and while he did make one really poor decision one night 8 years ago, he seems to be less of a personality risk.

Major also has baggage from when he fricked that trainer, so he's more likely to have to prove himself over a multiple year period before he'd be looked at by a bigger program.

UH admins considered how it would affect recruiting:

How comfortable would YOU be trusting LK with your son's future?
