It's been reported on multiple occasions that Lloyd Carr was and has never been in Les Miles' corner to replace him as head coach at Michigan. I've seen several reports out of Detroit and one NY Times article that mentioned the recruiting battle between the two universities over Jai Eugene, that ultimately ended when Eugene bailed on Michigan and signed with the Tigers.

What could have transpired during Eugene's recruiting that would have soured Carr to such a degree that it would ultimately lead his university into such a tailspin (from a coaching standpoint)?

Les told Carr we needed Jai to wave the towel for the Tigers.

Supposedly Miles used "negative recruiting" by mentioning Carr's medical condition and questioning how long he'd be coaching at Michigan (or something like that).

A player changing his NON BINDING commitment happens all the time in the SEC, and would guess everywhere else in the country. If THAT is what bothers Carr, he would get eaten alive in SEC recruiting. Jai has a child here in La. and from all accounts, that was the over riding reason he changed his mind, not anything underhanded Coach Miles did.

Oh well. Over the course of his career Jai will win more games at LSU than if he went to Michigan, has a conference chamionship ring, possibly a national championship ring, while the Michigan program is fading into obscurity and getting beat by their top rival every year.

And if the thing about Carr was Les Miles' recruiting pitch well... he turned out to be right.

Um yeah ole Lloyd doesn't seem to be all right upstairs. Heard an Ohio State fan say Les told Jai that Lloyd had Parkinson's.

I agree that Eugene only said he would play at Michigan next year so Miles had every right to sign him. Carr should have been more aggressive IMO. My question is why would you get upset with Miles if he were to leave for Michigan. I know he said he will coach LSU next year.

That is a tough one to digest if that is the case

its competition.

does that mean Carr is scared or hates some competition. They just expect players to want to play for Michigan.

Agreed... This is one of the reasons I wanted Miles to coach Michigan. He flat out recruits... He won't just sit there and say you have to come here because we are Michigan. I hope the next coach understands this.

Carr also refused to politic to the voters last year about why they deserved to play Ohio State instead of Florida.

That Old School crap can only take you so far these days. Does he still have a rotary dial phone in his office?

The word on the street here in MI is that Carr has MS.

I don't think Jai Eugene is worth beefing over

Barksdale NEVER had UM listed among his choices. He did have MSU listed. A UM friend of mine assumed that he clearly must have crappy grades then...until I showed him Barksdale's stellar academic numbers and pointed out that Barksdale was applying for early entry with those numbers so he could attend Spring football. He practically wept!!!!

It was BEAUTIFUL!!!

yea we went head to head really with tOSU for Barksdale. Probably the most impressive recruiting steal we've gotten in the Miles era.

Wasn't Barksdale Cornell Stewarts back-up? If Barksdale is so good, why in the world wasn't he starting?

1.Freshmen
2.Former Defensive Lineman (not nearly as taxing on the noodle)
3.Complex Offense (compared to high school)
4.Adjusting to SEC speed
5. Stewart is a pretty good run blocker

I am just glad that he is finally gone(stewart). I wonder how many false starts he got this year.

Thanks for the info.

Who would have ever thought (and ahh the complete irony of it all), that a 19 y.o. recruit, who isn't even that good (and may not ever see the field as a starter for LSU), has affected the head coaching positions of two of the most dominant and storied programs in CFB history- potentially changing the fate of both programs for years to come?

Jai didn't go to Michigan because he had a baby, and wanted to be close to his kid, so he chose LSU. Carr could have taken it the wrong way. Who knows.
