I'm still terrified of the O-pocalypse transpiring this weekend, but let's assume for a moment that Herman becomes the LSU coach. I have no qualms about his tactical acumen and leadership. He genuinely appears to be a genius in those respects. But is he an elite recruiter? Can he consistently haul in Top 10/Top 5 classes? All the schematic prowess in the world won't beat Bama and win NCS without the requisite talent. What is his reputation as a recruiter? Will he bring any ace recruiters with him, assuming he is the hire?

By the way, I desperately want him to be the coach, so this should not in any way, shape, or form be construed as an anti-Herman thread. Interested in the views of those who follow recruiting closely.

He is a very good recruiter from the limited time we've seen him as a head coach.

It can only get better at a bigger school.

Does he have to be? Or can he just have staff members that are?

He beat out LSU for Ed Oliver, who was so high on LSU he helps push Toby Weathersby to us.

He got the #4 overall recruit Ed Oliver to Houston. The first 5 star player ever sign with a non power five school.

recruiting isn't quantum physics

the big issue is if herman understands the value of recruiting, and given what he did to get ed oliver on his team, he does. some coaches just loathe recruiting and suck at it due to effort/mentality

you just hire good positional guys who are recruiters (like what we have in raymond, craige, juluke, oregeron) and they do most of the dirty work. the HC is more respnosible for creating a culture and mentality that is consistent and he seals the deal with this.

He also offered his coach a job to get him and had his brother on the roster already.

That's why I said he's a good recruiter from our limited time seeing him as a head coach.

He also hired Olvier's high school coach and Oliver didn't really want to leave Houston.

This speaks to SFPs point of knowing the value of recruiting.

I can't imagine ever feeling this way about Houston.

a. we've hired coaches before for recruits (Wilson/Freak)

b. this shows he understands the value of recruiting, which is all that matters

Can O Coach at a high level???

Thus whole thing is terribly funny.

Emotional choices often produce Dramatic results.

I understand why the local media want O as Coach cause he gives them what they want in PR department. I applaud the non emotional local media who have the balls to be honest about this hire.

It's alot of PomPom shaking going on right now. Smdh

Ed Orgeron the greatest recruiter in history per some LSU baws, hired Hugh Freeze to get Oher

and that was at Ole Miss...not Houston

No one knows because he is unproven. In fact, he may turn out to be the next Charlie Strong or not for all we know. Only time will tell.
