Particularly when it was the side of ball that isn't HC expertise
If we do go that route want to know how big my melt should be

Try growing up and wait to see how it all transpires before melting.

Clemson and Ohio state both had co-off coordinators recently with success. Those are the first 2 that came to mind.

So 3 good examples -Clemson, tOSU, and TCU
Also Gary Patterson is a defensive guy
Wonder how they separated duties?

Clemson, TCU. Ohio State I believe as well.

The same place where hiring a head coach that was 10-25 in the chair leads LSU to a NC.

This is just my guess based on the clash with Canada...we'll run Gilbert's offense and Ensminger is going to be O's safety blanket.
If the offense is struggling, O can defer to Steve without Gilbert feeling like O is going over his head. Again, just my guess.
ETA: I just realized you were asking how those other teams separated duties. Not sure.

It works in places where the HC is an offensive guru and the play caller and passing and running game duties are evenly distributed to 2 guys that you label co-OCs to them feel better about themselves.

I wouldn’t call Dabo Swinney a “Offensive Genius” and Gary Patterson is a Defensive coach

USC in 2005. Pete Carroll (defensive expertise) was the head coach and Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin were the co-offensive coordinators. They were undefeated until the loss in the BCSCG.

Dabo and Urban were offensive guys. Patterson is a good example though.

What about if your head coach has no expertise?

It worked out great here at LSU in 2008 with Mallory and Bradley Dale

I wouldn't say that O has "no expertise". I would say that he has no experience as a coordinator on either side of the ball, and I would also say that he's no guru of any sort. But I think saying "no expertise" is a cynical exaggeration.

Pretty sure Kiffin and Stark were co OCs under Carrol.
