Whaley: "Rex asked to speak to Terry privately. After that I was informed Rex would no longer be our coach. I was not privy to details."

Whaley: "I'm the GM of the football operation. I was told by my boss that I will no longer be working with a certain person."

@4TomMartin
Whaley on not speaking to media after Rex firing: "I didnt feel the need to come out and speak after ownership's statement."

Whaley says as Bills GM, he did not need any input or explanation from the Pegulas on why Rex was fired. Wow.

@4TomMartin
Whaley asked if he agreed with the decision to fire Rex: "I haven't thought about it."

Whaley is painting this picture: Pegulas fired Rex, he answers to Pegulas in a no-nonsense fashion and keeps his head down. Interesting.

My big takeaway from Doug Whaley's season-ending presser:

Wow. Sometimes, I feel like I could run one of these teams.

Sometimes it's really easy to see why certain teams fail

Owner hires the GM. GM hires the head coach. Head coach hires the coordinators. Coordinators select their position coaches.

Personnel guys handle contracts and scouting.

This is the natural order of things.

Has there ever been a time where the natural order was not followed, and a team was a success? (Maybe you can argue, occasionally the Cowboys, but there's been a lot of suck under Jerrah as well).

Having the HC report directly to the owner? Terrible.

Head coaches pick position coaches alllllll the time.

hes been tasked with leading the HC search, with russ brandon (president) no longer involved, and the pegulas only "signing off" on his choice. he also seems to be consolidating power in that he hinted at the new coach reporting directly to him.

reading between the lines -- the owners picked rex (rumors were whaley wanted to hire Hue and keep schwartz at DC), and in realizing that they made the wrong choice are giving him more power and he will sink/swim with this decision.

it doesnt shock me that whaley wasnt pre-warned as it wasnt a planned conversation where the discussion occured. It also doesnt shock me that as a guy that is close to the pegulas he wasnt shocked and didnt need to ask a lot of questions about "why." last up, it doesnt shock me that he didnt want to toss rex or the owners under the bus and essentially decided to plead the 5th.

i do think the pegulas have a lot to learn here though and if not for their insanely deep pockets would be a disaster. hopefully they will get to the "sign checks and trust football guys" stage quick because the "meddling fans of the team" era of their ownership will not go well
