They about to get serious about football? Bad timing for Mizzou.

Illinois is one of those places that could win if they took football serious. The state produces enough talent to win.

So, Illinois currently has an interim chancellor, interim AD, and interim football coach...

Also like I mentioned in my thread I bet Groce is gone this year too.

He's had some talent and been pretty bad.

Not a recruiter either.

You have no idea what you are talking about. He has been a solid recruiter and suffered the injury big more than anyone I have ever seen. If this does anything it buys Groce time.

I wouldn't think they give the HC job to the interim Cubit. Maybe PJ Fleck since he's from there and a young energetic type. Rod Carey may not be a bad option then Fleck goes to NIU. I don't know much about either program, but from the outside it seems like NIU cares more about their program though.

ETA: It wouldn't matter how much NIU cares about football if Illinois wants their coach. I'm sure they could pay 4-5 times what he currently makes.

Yeah. According to 247, Illinois has the 2nd rated class in the B1G and a Top 20 overall group. Seems like a good recruiter to me.

Ron Zook recruited some outstanding talent there, he just couldn't coach 'em up!! But yeah Illinois is a sleeping giant, they have Chicago like Louisiana has New Orleans.

I'm not sure Illinois is a sleeping giant in football, but is there any reason they shouldn't be a perennial top 25 school with an occasional great year. Not saying National Championships, but being in the discussion for the playoff once in a great while would be nice.

Then why don't they win? Recruits+talent+coaching= wins

What piece of the puzzle are you guys missing? Groce got a lot of heat for folding down the stretch last year. That doesn't happen to good teams.

Injuries and suspensions. Rayvonte Rice missed time down the stretch. Another player lost time for a suspension.

Have to explain in any way other than location and the fact they are not located right outside of/in their states major city.

Zook put a lot of NFL talent on his rosters, but couldn't keep them on the team and his in game management was mystifying. I think it was 2009 (might be off a year) where we went 3-9 with 9 future NFL players starting on defense in a weak B1G?
