Honest question - what do you see in Herman that makes you feel he wont fade like previous "it" hires like Rich Rod and Malzahn? I get he runs an explosive offense but so did those two before defenses (and lack of QB for system) caught up with them.

Not flaming but I'm genuinely curious as to what traits he may possess that the other two didn't that would allow for sustained success.

His teams just want to run through a brick wall for him

They play so hard. On offense and defense.

He's extremely intelligent (Mensa member)

The moment I knew he would be a great coach, though, is when he prepared a 3rd String quarterback in Cardale Jones to take down Saban/Kirby Smart's Defense..

I was sold

Things i Like about Tom Herman.

1. He runs a system that has been shown to work in the SEC (Florida and to some extent MSU) and at Ohio State against good teams

2. He turned Houston into a Juggernaut essentially instantly. They went 8-5, 8-5 and 507 the three years before he got there.

3. He cares about defense. Which is huge for an offensive minded coach.

Mike Leach
Petrino didn't seem to at Arkansas
Dana Holgreb
Cliff Kingsbury
Rich Rod

I am sure they care but they don't invest their athletes in it.

What athletes do they have on defense? Looks to me these are coaches whos teams are hardly if ever in the top 30 in recruit rankings.

You can create advantages on offense, dbl teams, misdirection ect. Gotta have talent to play defense, I dont care how good you coach em up. 3 star players cant cover 5's.

Look at the Saints, one of the worst defenses in the league. D Allen didnt forget how to coach defense, we just dont have the players who can cover the opposition.

Saban didn't bring in those two to pay them for their knowledge on how to better his defense because they were eaten up by them. He brought in Herman to make those changes to his defense.

Hmm I hadn't thought of the defense angle. That's a good point.

Houston currently has a top 5 defense...He's pretty well balanced which isn't a surprise since he's from the Urban Meyer coaching family.

Him players play very hard for him and no matter who his QB is, he produces.

Ohio state did not have the 3 best QB's in the country on one team, he just made them look like the best.

I like and want Herman, but I find it funny that some people were bashing the idea of Dan Mullen, when his resume and Herman's are basically mirror images.

Everything non football related. His intelligence, leadership, organizational skills set him apart from any other recent flavor of the month. There are lots of links, stories, and videos about what he's doing over there off the field.

I agree with you 100%. D.M. was 'Herman' right before he was hired by Miss St....the hot-topic OC working for Meyer. Since then he has been in the SEC W competing (home/away, recruiting, etc.) and doing abv avg given his program is #2 in the state next to OM; and his facilities, staff, program history, etc...are avg at best. Guy is only 44, and I think would be a very good hire for LSU. *With that said I'm all about pursuing Herman and Jimbo, but Mullen should be near the top of the list. I would take Mullen over Briles, Fedora, and most of the other names I have heard...

as would I. exactly my point. if we have to "drop down" to the next tier, mullen, imo, is more proven than many of the other names thrown in the hat.

Tom Herman's win percent as a HC .944

Dan Mullen's win percent as a HC .606

How are those the same?
