Now that we have a book board it's high time to discuss my favorite fantasy series.

Is Rand the GOAT ultimate badass? I say yes. By the end he is almost godly in abilities and wisdom. The scene outside Maradon is unbelievable. I just wish it wouldn't have taken him so long to become what we all wanted him to be.

If you could save one character who would it have been? For me, Rhurac. He deserved better and was pivotal in the success of Rand.

Letdowns? Matt marrying Tuon. He belongs with the Band not dressed in some ridiculous outfit with those seanchen dogs.

No. That honor goes to Lan Mandragoran. He had no "godlike" abilities and still took down Demandred and turned the entire tide of the Last Battle for everyone. Including Rand

quote:

Demandred felt at the wound in his cheek, and his eyes opened wider. “Who are you?” Demandred asked.

“I am the man who will kill you.”

quote:

“I have you,” Demandred finally growled, breathing heavily. “Whoever you are, I have you. You cannot win.”

“You didn’t listen to me,” Lan whispered.

One last lesson. The hardest…

Demandred struck, and Lan saw his opening. Lan lunged forward, placing Demandred’s sword point against his own side and ramming himself forward onto it.

“I did not come here to win,” Lan whispered, smiling. “I came here to kill you.

Death is lighter than a feather.”

quote:

That one you have tried to kill many times, Rand said, that one who lost his kingdom, that one from whom you took everything…

Lurching, bloodied from the sword strike to his side, the last king of the Malkieri stumbled to his feet. Lan thrust his hand into the air, holding by its hair the head of Demandred, general of the Shadow’s armies.

That man, Rand shouted. That man still fights!

quote:

If you could save one character who would it have been? For me, Rhurac.

I can agree with you here.

Letdowns?

Matt's marriage to Tuon seemed like a better fit than Perrin's marriage to Faile.

I love this series, it was my first in the genre - its not the most well written or unique, but i love it and still is tied for first.

Rand is not ultimate fantasy bad arse (read malazan for that shite)

Best scene is cleansing of saidin for me (outside of maradon is also amazing) also when rand finally loses his rage after talking to his father and that whole scene.

biggest let down - most of the women were poorly written and annoying - mainly Nyn. But still love it.

Book Board seems more like fantasy series board.

ETA: forgot - actual favorite scene is when Rand goes through the pillars of Rhuidian.

I used to do a re-read every time a new book came out so i have read the first ones a ton of times - the final one i think i've read twice.

Well if anyone else wants to discuss it

- there is reportedly going to be a TV show soon. I am sure the show will not do the books any justice, but it will be cool to see some of whats been in my head for so long on the big screen.

I am so excited but so dreadful of this. Wheel of Time readers have really invested alot of themselves over the years with the series. I just don't feel like in today's PC Hollywood that it can be done justice like the readers have envisioned. Just wish they would stick to the book .... But they won't...

Egwene

Tough to see her go after everything she went through.

And it was doubly tough to see her demise coming because of Gawyn

I echo most of Sneaky_Sally's sentiment. I think my favorite thing about this series is the author's dedication to his fans. The amount of time and preparation he put into passing it to Sanderson after he received his diagnosis. I will always appreciate that.

Yes, and just the continuity of the world - he references things in book 3 that offer direct insight into how a character will behave 6 books later. There are some issues with how he writes certain characters, repetitive descriptions but overall he still wrote tons of interesting characters, there were good female characters - its the male / female relationships that were odd (Rand hit the jackpot getting to bang 3 hotties on the reg).

Still love the series, and very appreciative that Jordan and his wife got Sanderson to write the final three books to complete the series. They were solid contributions too - there were so many more stories there to tell though in this world which is disappointing. Always wanted to know more about the Seanchan home world and what happened over there. :pulls braid:

To say the least. They were infinitely better than the last 4-5 books that RJ actually wrote, which were absolute dogshit.

I'll always love WoT. It was my first fantasy series and the first 6 are awesome. 8-11ish are excruciating.

This has always been one of my primary criticisms of the series. Jordan's characters seemed to be incapable of having a relationship with the opposite sex with any emotional maturity beyond that of an 8yr-old.

I disagree with the hyperbole.

Starting with Winter's Heart, they were slow - but that is less than a quarter of the whole series so pretty damn good batting average.

They also were a lot better on the re-read i did about 5ish years ago when the last book came out. I thought Jordan's final book was a quality offering as well and superior. Also waiting for book for a few years and then not a lot happening in the book cast a really bad light on them in the moment. Winter's Heart was a tough read.

I think it is largely a function of the teen audience as well as the time period he started writing in where tv and moves to a lesser extent were not nearly as blatantly sexual as they are today.

I think I read the series until book 6. I just couldn't take it anymore. I was just wanting him to wrap the damn series up. I guess I just like shorter series.
