Just finished Name of the Wind and thought it was great. About to start book 2. Is it better than Breath? I wonder if this will ever reach the big screen. If it does I hope Amazon doesn’t get its hands on it. Any word on book 3 or are we looking at another Game of Thrones type deal?

No, unfortunately it is not.

I don't really pay attention to sites that track progress, but from what I glean from people on this site, Rothfuss is worse than GRRM. Whereas GRRM seems to be lazy and perhaps stuck, Rothfuss seems to be angry and sticking his heels in to not go any futher.

Name of the wind was an incredibly well crafted book. The second was far less so.

Third book will never be written, going on ?15? years now? Rothfuss has totally checked out mentally, and lashed out at his fans in brutal and unforgivable ways.

He claimed at the beginning that all three books had already been written. A few years ago stated that he was polishing the third book up with his publisher, who had to release a statement that they had not communicated for years, that rothfuss had long since stopped returning the Publisher's calls.

He has earned the loathing of his former fans

Was a very good book. One of my favorites in fact. I think I read it about 7 years ago and held off reading the 2nd until the third was announced. Well that’s been a while. I do think I would like to reread Name of the Wind again, and finally read the 2nd book.

I know he was done some Novellas but I have not read them.

He released a short story in the same universe that was allegedly to be followed soon after by the Third book. I think the short story was called "upon picking something up, and setting it somewhere else, it was probably better where it started, so I put it back"

That story was so bad I couldn't come close to finishing, even for free. I think I made it like 30-40 pages in and gave up.

And to answer the OP and agree with everyone else, the second book is nowhere close to Name of the Wind.

I've never understood how it was supposed to be a trilogy series to begin with, as the best case scenario is the trilogy simply catching Kvothe up to current day. Which wouldn't finish the Chandrian story in any sort of way. So I'm not surprised he's struggled to finish.

Which, considering he's turned out to be a Titanic twat, I'm more amused than sad about (particularly since the second book sucked anyway).

Name is one of the best fantasy novels of all time imo.

2 is…not. But I don’t dislike it as much as others.

3 will never ever happen.

Agree completely.

The money's going to run out one day. He seems like a very weird dude but being poor, then being rich, then being poor again seems like a pretty strong motivator.

Most everything good about the second book is a rehash of the first. And the almost poetic style of the first is replaced by lazy writing. And unfortunately the second book also removes all doubt that the hero is a self-insertion character who happens to be perfect at everything and isn't simply lying about his life, which is the only thing that could have redeemed the story.

I'd read a third book but I don't have much confidence that it will be good even if it eventually gets written.
