There was a book called Constantinopolis that came out not long ago. I read a few chapters but never finished. Set in the waning days of Byzantine Empire when the Turks were closing in. I stopped reading it only Bc it kind of made me depressed, it was such a doomed story.

I think Herman Wouk sets the standard in this regard. Both The Winds of War/War and Remembrance and The Hope/The Glory are excellent works. Someone above mentioned Leon Uris - this is another master of weaving fiction in and out of history. And I'm not Jewish, I just happen to enjoy reading about WWII and the world that emerged out of it.

Thomas B. Costain wrote several pieces of historical fiction and writes history in very entertaining fashion.
The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey is worthy of investigation.
For shear enjoyment with an educational side effect you can't beat the Flashman series.

Book One of the Mongoliad was really enjoyable.
