Three-time Newbery Honor author Gary Paulsen, known for his wilderness adventure novels for children such as ‘Hatchet,’ died this morning at age 82

Read his book in grade school; loved them. Think nearly every kid in my grade read the Hatchet and thought about if they would be able to survive in the wilderness like that Paulsen could paint a picture with words.

I remembered reading that book but not the title and looked it up just a few weeks ago. I enjoyed it as a kid. Thought my daughter might like it. She loved My Side of the Mountain.

Well this sucks.

If you’re a dog person, read his short book “My Life in Dog Years.” Nothing fancy, just him telling stories about the dogs he has had over the years. It’s a very good read.

Awww, that’s sad. Recommending books to middle school/high school boys at the library was always the hardest - so I always recommended Gary Paulsen

RIP

I'm shocked schools allow his book to be read anymore. I just assume any good books about males are banned.

My son read Hatchet several years ago and loved it. I loved My Side of the Mountain as a child and truly felt that I could have lived inside a big tree. I could picture it so clearly in my mind.
