Need help remembering a book series and I know the TD sleuths can come through.

I have spent an hour on the internet trying to find this book series. Here are the things I remember.
Genre was fantasy.
I read them in the ‘80’s.
Premise was something about a fog/mist/darkness of some kind moving across the land and in it/behind it was army of orcs/ogres etc.
Their were typical characters- elves, dwarves, halflings.
Their was one human character I believe named Dax or Daks. He was described as a weapons expert almost like a ninja. In the last book he had one on one battle with a creature that in my memory was like a giant red ape.
Any ideas??

Dang…I knew someone here would come thru for me. Thanks Biglego. It is the second one. The Iron Tower Trilogy.
I remember really enjoying the series as a 12 y/o. Thought about trying to find it on audio book. Doing a lot of driving around for work here lately and was curious if I would find it as entertaining now as an adult.

I will also add that the book cover you found looks horrible compared to the ones I read. I’m too old and technology challenged to post pics but I googled the series to read a synopsis to see if it was then book I was trying to remember. It was but on google it showed a different cover art which was the one I remembered. Glad I didn’t see this version as a kid or I likely would have never read them.

I think your memory is combining two different trilogies into one. I'm not familiar with The Iron Tower Trilogy, but the second part of your description sounds like The Wishsong of Shannara, which is the third book in the original Shannara Trilogy by Terry Brooks. There is a character named Garet Jax, who is a bad mfer known as "the weapons master." At the end of the book he duels a huge red apelike creature called a jachyra. I read the series as a kid and listened to the audio books fairly recently as an adult. It holds up well in my opinion.
