I am not a sci fi person but I liked Under the Dome Stephen King.

TV series was horrible.

There are so many directions you could go with this.

This is a pretty good resource for narrowing it down. Overall a pretty decent list.

I'm reading The Expanse series right now. It's really good. Starts with Leviathan Wakes.

Foundation by Isaac A. Asimov - short, easy to read and the main three (Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation) are all phenomenal.

You could try a classic one, like John Carter of Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
