Any book suggestions to get a first hand feel of what life was like during and then after WW2 in Germany? There must be some people that lived incredibly different chapters of their lives. TIA.

I second The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer
Great book about how shitty it was for the German soldier on the Eastern front.
I also enjoyed Black Edelweiss: A Memoir of Combat and Conscience by a Soldier of the Waffen-SS

I love all things eastern front. Wwi and wwii. Such an understated and unferappreciated front.

great book.
Also check out Soldat, it follows a senior German staff officer through the war (Russia, France, Italy).

Wasn't there some rumbling a few years back that some of that book was fabricated?
Great book, though.

The Twelve Year Reich Gets into life in Germany before and during the war. Kind of looking at the home front in Germany.

He was accused of never having served in the Grossdeutschland because of some discrepancies with uniform items and other "daily life" inaccuracies.
I believe the grossD veterans organization made nice with him later in life.

For fiction, The Tin Drum is an amazing book. It's weird, but it has some incredibly fricked up scenes.
