One of the best he wrote. IIRC it’s his first meeting with Ralph Stedman.
A little off topic, but some coworkers and I were discussing how, “We were somewhere near Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold,” is up there for opening lines with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” in literature. But of course it doesn’t get mentioned enough because Thompson was part of the counterculture, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas isn’t taken seriously.
The man had a way with words, and continued that cynicism that we all love about him all the way up to the end. Titling his suicide letter “Football Season is Over,” is absolutely brilliant. I would love to hear his commentary today.
Sorry for the hijack. Carry on.
