Looking for some good recommendations.

Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34

Not exactly what you're looking for I don't think but it's a good read.

It tells about J Edgar Hoover starting the FBI and goes in-depth on John Dillinger and his crew and Baby-Face Nelson.

It also take an in-depth look at Bonnie and Clyde that mihht surprise you.

The Johnny Depp movie "Public Enemies" is based on it but that movie is just a John Dillinger action movie. Google books gave it a 3.9 but it was a best-seller. You can do with that info what you like.

I haven't read it in years but Mafia Dynasty is good. It follows the Gambino family from their arrival through John Gottis fall.

Five Families: The Rise, Decline, And Resurgence Of America's Most Powerful Mafia Empires follows all 5 families.

Mafia Kingfish is about Carlos Marcello and the JFK assassination.

Nick Pileggi wrote Wiseguys (Goodfellas) and Casino.

I am forgetting the name of another I read years ago about the control of Vegas and the war between the families.

Wiseguy (amazing how much dialogue Scorsese took straight from the book);
Gomorrah (about the mob in Naples that was the basis for the great movie and current series on Sundance);
Paddy Whacked (the role the Irish played in the formation and development of organized crime in the U.S.); and
I Heard You Paint Houses (convinced that this is the true story of the ending of Jimmie Hoffa by the guy that killed him).

State Line Mob is an accurate retrospective for the period it depicts.

Written in 1990 it is dated, but the dixie mafia has more sophisticated measures today by virtue of tech, yet are perhaps more virulent in their Brooks Brothers suits.

I knew some of the players lawyers involved.

Italian mob had nothing on dixie gangsters.
