Was a bucket list book that I never read in my younger years. Loved it. After the first couple of pages I could easily see how George Lucas got many ideas for the Star Wars story from this book. Herbert wrote an amazing sci fi classic 58 years ago. The final chapters were great. I loved how he wrote the Alia character and was wishing for more!

Good news is, the sequels are also great. Bad news is Herbert died before finishing the series (and no, I don't consider his son's abominations to be what Frank intended for the ending.)

I hope you read the rest of them. God Emperor of Dune is my favorite book in the series.

Next up Dune Messiah. Seeing a lot of reviews saying it doesn’t stand up compared to fist book. I guess I’ll find out.

I mean, none of them hold up to the original, but they are still very solid. I'm personally not a huge fan of God Emperor, but it's many folks favorite book of the series. I think the last two were fantastic though, and really wish he could have finished it.

Messiah isn't bad at all. But Dune was such a runaway success, Herbert was pressured to write a sequel. Its a smaller novel than Dune. I think the third book makes up for the shortcomings of Messiah.

Read Messiah then immediately read Children of Dune after. In my mind they're one book.

Let us know when you finish God Emperor and what your thoughts are on it.

Some of the "heroes" in Dune turn out to be "villains" in Dune Messiah, and some readers don't like that.

If you can deal with that, Dune Messiah is great. I've only read the first four books in the series, but they are all fantastic.

Great read!

No way they could make a movie on this book in 2hrs viewing time, but that goes for any good book as everyone hear already knows.

The book is always much better than the movie.

Short stories make the best movies.

I feel like no one has ever made a movie that does the book justice. This seems ridiculous considering how often people have made movies from this book.

Sometimes novellas as well.

Several by Stephen King

Stand by Me based on "The Body", The Shawshank Redemption based on "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption", and Mr. Harrigan's Phone based on a novella of the same name

The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway as well.

I don’t know if you can purchase it individually but the National Theatre (UK) has their version of Frankenstein on stage with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating between The Creature and Dr. Frankenstein. And it’s really fantastic.

Oh, I'd like to see that. I'll see if I can find it anywhere. Thank you.

Finished re-reading Frankenstein for the first time since high school a few weeks ago. I always felt like I loved that book but on the re-read I wasn't that big of a fan. Dr. Frankenstein was much more annoying than I remember and I didn't sympathize with the Creature as much either.

Starting to think I liked the book so much because it was the only book I ever read in high school

Finished it as well. The ending seem a bit rushed to be honest. He could have done another 5 chapters just with the ending. But other than that I have no complaints,it is a hell of a world he created. The dude's imagination if off the charts.
I agree with you on the Alia character, extremely creepy, yet fascinating character.

Finished up Frankenstein and so happy I picked it up. Written so eloquently. It’s amazing to me that she was able to convey Dr Frankenstein’s misery in so many ways without it becoming annoying. Shelly wrote the story when she was 18 which I find very impressive. Starting Dune Messiah now.
