Major crackpot here..

So I was watching a 60 minutes segment on Pope Francis, about his humility and work with the poor, also about his reforms. It reminded me somewhat of a similar religious leader from out ASOIAF. Trouble is, Pope Francis was elected in 2013, but his ideas were out there previously. I wouldn't want to presume so much, but is there any chance of coincidence here?

I doubt the Pope will have any queens running naked through the streets though.

Who, the High Sparrow??

And I'm guessing the current High Septon won't die until the beginning of S5 and we'll meet the High Sparrow then.

The show needs to introduce Lyanna and Rhaegar some more soon right? They need to spoon feed the Hodors a bit before the big R+L=J reveal

Oberyn already mentioned in E1 to Tyrion that "Rhaegar ran off with another woman" and opened that up...

Yeah. Hodors gonna need more than that. They were pretty heavy handed explaining how important the iron bank is tonight so the hodors will know the deal with that

Yeah I think they are laying it on about Robert and Rhaegar fighting over a woman as well (ETA: It being one of the reasons for the rebellion). Watched the Season 3 bluray extras on youtube and they eluded to this.

Where has Hugo been?? He's been posting less and less, just like how Varys has only been in 2 episodes of this season so far...

That's one thing that I haven't seen discussed yet that was an interesting tidbit of information not shared in the books...the gold mines running dry 3 years prior to that conversation. With out gold to back them up the Lannisters are pretty much dead in the water anyways.

:lightbulb:

That scene (with Cersie and Tywin) was filmed from in the corner of the room or from some vantage point. Could it be from the perspective of Varys lurking in the backways? Could he have heard such a conversation and decide to help Tyrion escape? causing more chaos in House Lannister and helping Cersie to go further berserk?

Great observation Taxman. Never thought of it that way.

And I was very surprised/happy to see Tywin mentioning that the Lannisters aren't shitting gold like everyone in the kingdoms presumed. I'm really liking the emphasis on the Iron Bank in the show, and that's definitely going to play into Littlefinger's plot later on in the books and show (Littlefinger admitting to bankrupting the Crown) as well as the backing of Stannis.

And Tywin said he had been financing Robert, and the Crown was in debt to tIB...is C Rock in hock to them by default?

I'm guessing Stannis is going to have his sell sword army with him when he destroys the wildings. It's the only thing that makes sense. The show makes it seem like he has like a dozen men left, in the books it was closer to 2,000.

Do we know anything about the status of the Crown's financial situation prior to Robert's Rebellion? Were the Targaryens responsible with their money, or did they wipe their asses with golden dragons like the Baratheon reign did?

Ned remarks in GOT that Aerys left the vaults filled with gold.

Good point.

So did Robert waste a lot of money since all he cared about was banging whores and having lavish feasts, tourneys, and nameday celebrations? And Littlefinger had to keep borrowing to keep up with the demands as well as furthering his own personal agenda to bankrupt the Crown. Littlefinger was the only one in charge of the books and had no segregation of duties...he was given too much control over the finances of the crown/had unlimited access and no internal controls; but this is also a fantasy world that doesn't have the financial structure that many governments and companies have.

pretty sure Littlefinger was collecting a good percentage of the taxes and keeping it himself. Weren't all the underlings "his" men? I thought Tyrion fond this out gradually.

I wouldn't think LF would steal from the crown, and if he did I don't think he would've left any way for Tyrion or anyone else to track lost funds to him. He was good at coming up with $ where there was none, but I don't remember Tyrion blaming him for theft.

I think Robert blew through the treasury over his 14 years.

I wonder who they will cast for Victarion and Euron.

I agree with most people on Ray Stevenson (titus pullo) as Victarion, but I don't really have an idea for Euron. Both of these characters should be really awesome to watch on screen in season 5.
