I took workshops with Michael Farris Smith at the W. 20% of our grade was publishing. We had to submit something to a journal the old fashioned way, and he walked us through getting an agent and the pitfalls of self-publishing. I was amazed at the number of places that take submissions, and at the number of contests that are active at any given time.

Drop me an email if You are serious about critiques. I've got a spin on the Tell-tale Heart that I think is almost ready for publishing, but not quite.

Youve just got to find a group of like-minded people. They will know where to submit. I'm happy to offer critiques.

I'll tell you this for free. Any writer worth their salt can glance at a bit of writing and tell whether the author reads or not. I've sat in several classes where it was painfully obvious that the author wasn't a Constant Reader.

I hit on a flash fiction page in mid October. It was good enough to make their anthology.

Shoot it to LoveThatMoney9@gmail.com.

I'll try to get to it as soon as I can. Twins are killing free time, though.

The Kansas City Star Style sheet (PDF link)
quote:

This facsimile of The Star Copy Style sheet is one of the most often-requested pieces of memorabilia relating to the history of The Kansas City Star.

This is the document that Ernest Hemingway would have been given during his tenure writing police and emergency-room items at The Star in 1917 and 1918.

Hemingway later remarked to a reporter that the admonitions in this style sheet were “then best rules I ever learned in the business of writing.”

This early Star style sheet exists today in two different versions, but neither can be dated definitively. The version reproduced on the reverse of this page is believed to be the one used at the newspaper around 1915. It is likely that Hemingway used either this rule sheet or another very similar version.

If you're serious about it, sure. If not, no. But I can't imagine it's in any sort of shape for critiques if you wrote it in one go and haven't looked at it editorially yourself.

I'll revisit it at some point. Started drinking and fell asleep to Frasier.
