" According to the latest estimates, about half of your cells are not human... as you read these words, trillions of microbes and quadrillions of viruses are multiplying on your face, your hands and down there in the darkness of your gut. With every breath you take, with every move you make, you are sending bacteria into the air at the rate of about 37 million per hour — your invisible aura, your personal microbial cloud. With every gram of food you eat, you swallow about a million microbes more."

I CONTAIN MULTITUDES, The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life. By Ed Yong.

Microbes and their use will be the true frontier of science in the 21st Century.

This is the most illuminating science book I have read. In addition, the author is a journalist, so he can write. This is not a dry listing of research notes and trial findings, so it is easy to read for a layman like me.

Realistically, without the knowledge of microbes as presented in this book, as far as medicine and biology is concerned, we're like Jon Snow in the cave.

About to expertly perform cunnilingus, during our first sexual encounter, on a red-headed broad that's never had a tongue in her snatch?

Edit to add: Sounds like an interesting book. Microbes and parasites are something I like to point out to people when discussing animal extinctions. If you kill off a larger organism, chances are host specific microorganisms and parasites will join them in oblivion.

Will check it out, I'm always on the lookout for science-y books that are easy to read.

A few that I've enjoyed recently:
Your Inner Fish
How it Ends
Sapiens
