Coach Kevin Kelly of Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas instructs his players to never punt, never field punts, and only do onside kickoffs. His reasoning? He says math and stats say not to...

LSU 318 LSU - Why do you say it isn't football? So if your team fakes a punt or field goal, or tries a halfback pass or flea flicker, do you say that isn't football? Anything done within the rules is football, especially if it works. I say more power to Kevin Kelly and every coach who tries to be innovative in sports.

I like it. And stats wise it makes perfect sense for this level of football.

This philosophy works very well at the high school level, and frankly I suspect teams should go for it more often in short yardage situations even in the NFL.

But a big part of why it works in HS is that punters at that level don't reliably buy you much distance. If you're an NFL coach and know your punter can get you 40+ yards for your solid D to work with, going for it on 4th and 7 from your own five yard line is nuts. If you coach HS ball and your punter might punt 40 yards or 10 plus your defense is dubious to start with, it's a bit different.

The HS game is built around talented athletes, and they tend to play offense.

I actually like this. It really forces you to stay on your toes at all time if you're ?the opposing team. Its like those people on madden who never punt, kick ?the field goal/pat,etc. I hate them because they're so difficult to beat. This coach has proven this method works as well. I would have loved to play for him in high school

You get 4 downs to go 10 yards, so why not use all 4 to get the yardage? I like it.

Dan Mullen needs to take notes. Our special teams are absolute shite.

That is very surprising. Not the coach, but that Larry actually posted something interesting.

There is a school in Moreauville, LA called Avoyelles High School that does the same shite. Even if they are up by 50, they will still go for 2 and kick an onside kick. That just isn't football.
