i could be wrong but not a single eastwood movie had indians in it, if there were, it was less than 5 minutes total for the whole movie and they werent part of the story, just background

well beside the outlaw josie wales, that is one that had indians in it

Native Americans are a big part of the story of The Outlaw Josey Wales. It was one of the first times they were not portrayed as villains in a film, and in the end they were a key element of the movie’s closing theme of acceptance.

Definitely more than five minutes of that Eastwood film. But a far cry from earlier Westerns of previous decades where they were the stereotypical villain.

One thing that has hurt too is that they are just expensive to make. And rarely do they do well at the box office. So studios aren't too inclined to do them from a financial standpoint.

I love the genre, but I've given up hope on it being the genre it used to be. One good thing though is that TV westerns are thriving pretty good. You can definitely get your western fix streaming.

This is what I recall when he left the show. He went in thinking his part would be much bigger than it actually was much like many other actors in shows with a large cast.

In the greatest television western of all time, Deadwood,

I loved Deadwood, I've probably watched it through 10 times, but Lonesome Dove has to get the nod as the GOAT. And Blue Duck was one of the most chilling villains ever. Far from faceless or generic.

And while movie westerns might never return to their 1950s level of ubiquity, they'll always pop up from time to time.

Maybe. I liked Laramie but it’s hardly new.

Westerns today would not be terribly realistic with their casting choices.

Hell, William Munny had a black partner 3p years ago and Hell on Wheels had a black railroad chief of police to go along with the black track crew.

I think we can still get smaller/indie Westerns like, Old Henry that came out in 2019, which is fantastic if you haven't seen it. Not only is it the best western I've seen in years it is probably in my top 5.

These are unrealistic? You know you can Google things, right?

Probably not. Nowadays no decent movies set in historical times can be made if they’re set in The western world.

To reinforce your point…
Shane
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Ride The High Country
High Noon
Monte Walsh
Will Penny
The Shootist
The Cowboys
True Grit
My Darling Clementine

…and so forth.

Two Mules for Sister Sara had an Indian attack. Not a big part of the movie, but the arrow wound treatment stuck with me.

Pale Rider . Deconstructionist? Interesting.
Pale Rider Is Eastwood’s profane remake of Shane.

I don’t know if Derrida’s philosophical musings influenced Shane. If they did, changing the boy to a young girl and having Shane/Preacher sleep with the mother hardly revolutionizes or renews the genre so much as vulgarize and cheapen it.

On the other hand, maybe that’s the point of the changes considering my response to them. Deconstructionist may apply after all.
Who knew?

I don’t think there’s a big audience for westerns anymore.

I like a few, but personally I find them kind of dull after a while. They almost all have the exact same aesthetics. Same scenery, same sounds of horses clopping and whatnot. I bet it’s hard to come up with compelling stories that haven’t already been told when the genre is so confined. They have to take place in the west and will usually be set in the 1800s. That’s the landscape and that’s the technology available for the story.
