Every single ones of those bastards musked me. And when you grab them they freak out and fling it all over. It has a unique almost “sweet” smell - not nearly as bad as water snakes....

Yes - they pretty much only eat amphiumas, so they usually hang out in swampy areas. If there’s an a swampy area with a road running through it, they are easier to cruise up on the road than to hike up in the swamp. You want to road cruise them right at dark. They’re very unique in their behavior. They tuck their head against their body and lash out like striking but don’t open their mouth. They curl up their tail to give you that flash of red, and sometimes flip over to show their belly...

Been catching a few Western mud snakes lately…we got 17 in the past 5 nights. Best night was Monday - me & my buddy got 6 in 29 minutes. Love is in the air this month so they’re on the move. 4 Friday, (skipped Saturday), 4 Sunday, 6 Monday, 3 Tuesday.

Yep, yellow bellies are the same as plain-bellied. In some places the belly is whiter but some locales they are yellow....
