Anyone have any good contacts for someone who can supply feral birds locally? I have trapped them in the past but would prefer focusing that time and effort on actually training these days. Eventually I would like to get a few homers but that is a few years down the line.

Anyone buy pigeons locally? What is the current going rate?

They’re hard to come by. I’ve found a few on Facebook marketplace but have paid a premium for them. Pigeon people are weird. Don’t tell them about the dogs hah.

Go to walmart parking lot in Leesville.

They will eat out of your hand.

Catch 2 and go home.

Profit.

By far the biggest pain of the arse process kf bird dog training is the birds

At one point I went full Jed Clampett with a pen of quail in my backyard in mandeville

Dip net, underpass, midnight. Bust them on the roost.

As others have said....DO NOT tell them about the dogs. I ran into some quail people in the past that pretty much strictly sold for dog training, but that was years ago so I doubt they are still doing it.

Definite biggest PIA of bird dog training and it seems most of the serious guys raise their own. There's a few guys on here that will probably able to help you out.

This has to be folks breeding homers for racing or training with cap guns etc...Those folks spend a lot of time and energy working on the genetics and training them so I understand they are wary to sell shooters unless they are trying to remove them from their breeding program.

I have had decent luck trapping the birds I need and get the benefit of actually shooting live birds over my dog. I struggled with finding them last year so I would be happy to help out anyone that may need some this spring. I just typically need a couple days notice to make sure I am passing through BR.

Vonnie’s work well also and easy to get but don’t tell them what they are being used for.
