What's the difference in with or without wax?

General cure times?

Any other helpful tips would be appreciated.

You looking to spray on a new layer? I know you can bring your old coat back by wet sanding and applying compound, polish, wax layers

I had my whole boat redone at a fiberglass shop. They wet sanded and polished everything. The exterior had gotten really oxidized over the years and I didn’t properly maintain it. Looked liked new after the wet sand and now I make sure to keep a coat of polish on it to protect it.

I stopped using wax and now use a synthetic Marine Polish from Starbrite. Holds up much better than wax and cheaper than ceramic.

You have to have wax or it won’t cure.

Aqua Buff 1000
Aqua Buff 2000
Wax with Rejex when done

Keep the Aqua Buff wet while doing it.
Twisted wool pad.

You can bring it back to new. On higher end boats, the gel coat is as thick as a credit card- so there is plenty material to work with.

Just know Aqua Buff 1000 is pretty aggressive- you may not need to start that rough.

For the most part, you can likely avoid a full wet sand with it.

Re-gelcoating is a big job. Gelcoat doesn’t spray slick like paint, unless you use additives (Duratec Hi-gloss). Even with that it requires a good bit of post cure finishing and polishing.

Refinishing (wet sand/ polish) is good. But you got to maintain it religiously. And keep the sun exposure to a minimum. Gelcoat can be a bitch to maintain. Any sun exposure just eats it alive. Even if you wax it pretty often.

Gelcoat is tougher than paint. But doesn’t hold up near as well as paint to UV. Wraps are an option.

We had our boat sanded and painted with Awlgrip. Maybe not as “tough” as gelcoat, but it was 1000000 times easier to keep clean. And looked brand new with just a quick spray down.

Any decent fiberglass shop can do this for you. I had my done at Dears Fiberglass.

My Imron paint job is 16 years old this week. Still shines like brand new. Doesn’t stain. Cleans easy. I’ll take paint over gelcoat any day.
