Europeans do not use washcloths but I am not sure that being poor or black is a factor.
Who doesn't wash their legs and feet is more disturbing. I like the - you just washing the top half of your body with body wash and calling it good?- comment....

I have never heard that. Is there some background story on that? What did upper class people use? Or does it not count if someone else scrubs you with a cloth royalty/bather style?...

I had the same experience recently. My husband always pokes if he cooks them, I do not. Cleaning an exploded potato out of the oven is zero fun so I am now on team poke the potatoes....
