Because MK Dons used to be Wimbledon, and a whole bunch of shady and controversial shite happened and the club moved to MK.

That's a good part of it. Milton Keynes is a centrally-planned town, built from scratch in the middle 20th century. Then Wimbledon, not the most fashionable of clubs, but an established club nonetheless, moved there after a few really good years and cup runs.
The owner now is trash. They have a big, 31,000+ seat venue which, of course, they do not fill. There were 17,000 empty seats, yesterday, because the owner played games with the away support ticket allocation. Not only would they not make more tickets available, there was no ONE away support section. MKDons intentionally made two away support sections, and separated them.
Actually kind of liked old Wimbledon, and have a soft spot, because of all this, for the new AFC Wimbledon.
