Why are the top 10 most poverty stricken states "red states"?

These are likely the states with the lowest cost of living as well.

For one thing the cost of living in those states is much lower than in California, New York etc.

Glad to know it is acknowledged that Trump actually won New Mexico and Georgia and they are red states.

nah, i'm from alabama. and i started a back and forth with a lib about red states vs blue states and it was mentioned that rural areas are more poverty stricken that inner cities.

I'd bet there's a fairly noticeable correlation if you want to look for it...

you should probably take a look at the demographics and voting habits of the largest cities in those states

Poverty rate in Los Angeles is over 20%, NYC at 19%

This is like the most educated states are the least diverse.

Outside of wva, they are an outlier though.

Every major population center in Louisiana is run by democrats and has been for decades. We have a two term democrat governor who wields enormous power over the state.

The question should be, why isn’t the state in better shape with so many democrats in positions of power?

Yep...Democrat has won the last 4 Presidential Elections and 7 of the last 12 in New Mexico. Really it is more like 6 of the last 12...because there was less than 0.1% difference in the 2000 election.
