I completely agree with the first 4, but I'm not sure Eisenhower should be included in the 'best' list. He had a very robotic, jerky syntax when giving prepared speeches. He was an excellent president, and a brilliant man, but I would not consider him to be a very good orator.

They didn't call Reagan the "Great Communicator" for nothing.

Obama could read a teleprompter adeptly, meaning he understood inflection, pause for effect, subtleties that most lack. But as far as off the cuff, he stuttered and stammered and has trouble collecting and organizing his thoughts before speaking.

Trump is even better at speeches than Reagan, but Reagan was effective with prepared documents. Trump deviates from the script too much to equal Reagan.

Carter was ineffective. Clinton you just couldn't (and still can't) trust a single word that comes out of his mouth so that interferes with perception of speaking ability. Clinton is the slimy used car salesman of POTUS history.

HW Bush was effective but not charismatic. And GW had a hard time speaking both off the cuff and prepared canned stuff. Ford was about the same as HW, effective but not charismatic.

Hard to tell how good John Adams really was or Lincoln. Certainly they made brilliant speeches that they wrote. John Quincy Adams was known as Old Man Eloquent.

With a nod to those, I would say Reagan, FDR, TR, Clinton and Trump from video and what I’ve heard.

I also give a nod to Calvin Coolidge as sometimes silence is golden.

Trump was awesome as a president talking to the press, attending wh pressers, speaking during covid and all events he was a part of and still rocks it with massive rallies.

Well no surprise here. But totally not obsessed with Trump.

Reagan was the best at communicating a message. Obama, love him or hate him you have to admit he did have charisma.

Reagan is almost a given with his background. Obama was a great speaker, no doubt, but I think you're sleeping on JFK and both the Roosevelts.

Difficult to judge different eras, but Lincoln was considered a great speaker in his day.

Because Obama's speeches were mostly vapid and empty, he is just a much more competent version of Kamala or AOC. Reagan, the Roosevelts, JFK and Lincoln's important speeches were about serious, substantive issues.

My back of napkin Top 5# are:

1. Reagan
2. FDR
3. JFK
4. Lincoln
5. Teddy

Teddy
Ron
Bill

All very good. Obama was terrible without a pre written speech. He was too cautious when speaking without a prompter.

Only one was nicknamed "The Great Communicator,' and he was never called "clean and articulate" by the current President.

For those of you too young to know, Clinton gave the LSU Spring 1989 Commencement address as Governor of Arkansas at the time.

I attended and he was very good. Probably the best of about 8 college commencement speeches that I have heard in person.

Off the cuff? Trump. Prob Clinton too.

The rest couldn't even be perfect reading a teleprompter.

struggled without a teleprompter.

Videos out there of it failing and he is failing without it.

Reagan was best at turning the tables on a hostile media with humor.

I agree. I disagree with everything Obama stands for, but he was a good speaker. Reagan was also a good speaker, he was an actor for years so that makes sense.

Obama sounds terrific on-script w/teleprompter; borderline idiot off the cuff.

Best orator I ever heard — can’t believe I’m admitting this — was candidate Jesse Jackson on campaign trail in Ville Platte.

I also don’t know how you can accurately judge any President in pre audio days. Pitch, inflection, cadence, etc. need to be heard.

As a teen, JFK impressed me a lot. Reagan and Clinton were very effective.

Biden has set the presidency back at least 200 years, minimum.
