Engineering at Hillsdale:

I can go to the LSU or UL-Lafayette website and see the specific engineering degrees one can major in, like:

Chemical Engineering
Petroleum Engineering
Civil Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
And more..

I've been searching through the Hillsdale website, and I can't find that. That link just talks about some sort of "pre-engineering" tract, which you get a four year degree in an academic major like math or physics, then:

quote:

After successful completion of a four-year degree at Hillsdale College emphasizing science and mathematics, the graduate may apply to the engineering graduate school of choice. The graduate will then be well prepared for the corresponding graduate school studies. This is because the graduate work corresponds to engineering science. It does not depend on all of the undergraduate engineering coursework but mainly on the science and math knowledge taught at Hillsdale. Engineering graduate schools may provide a special course to introduce the science graduate to the science basics of the chosen engineering specialty. Completion of the master’s or Ph.D. degree in this way leads to many professional employment opportunities. This is a popular option leading to careers in engineering.

So if someone wanted to pursue say...a Chemical Engineering degree outright. Something that can graduate with in four years (I know, Chem E is probably more a five year major), it appears they cannot do that by merely attending Hillsdale College.

This is lazy thinking. The crazies at those schools get a lot of attention, but they are still a tiny minority and many of them are not even students.

Raise your children right, and it won't matter where they go to school.

There is a partnership program that students can arrange upon admission.

What matters is the school you can get into and how you're going to pay for it.

A moron, and I mean a real frickin' moron chooses Hillsdale College over Columbia or USC or Emory or Northwestern or Harvard or Yale or Johns Hopkins simply because they're protesting over some bullshite.

Stop living in the moment with all this campus shite. These are all world class institutions that the vast majority of Hillsdale students would've gone to had they been able to get in and pay for.

This is correct, but there are other variables. What is your major? Are you going to grad school? Where do you want to live? What kind of job/career do you want?

And, as you mentioned, how are you paying for it? Scholarship? Student loans? College savings?

All of those are important factors in whether an "elite" ultra-expensive education is worth it.

All this stuff on the news is but a blip in time and shouldn't even be a factor. The crazies are a small minority.

All of these schools have normal students as well. They all have College Republican chapters, etc.

Here's my point. Some people would argue that you should send your kid to Hillsdale College over somewhere like USC or Northwestern, which have highly recognized engineering degrees, because of the culture.

But if my kid (and I do have one doing this right now, though at an SEC school), wants to go directly into an engineering major, they can do that without the BS that's involved with some sort of Hillsdale pre-engineering program or doing some sort of "partnership program".

My kid can attend LSU, go straight into the College of Engineering, fully accredited, and get their shite done.

They teach math is racist in Calculus II at LSU, UL, LA Tech, etc??

When did that start?

Now...if one CHOSE to take some BS Philosophy class from a leftist professor ULM, then yeah...maybe they'd have to put up with hearing that garbage. But not in the actual math class itself.

What colleges are on the non-woke list these days, anyway?
Are any of them names that wouldn't get your kid's resume ... filtered just by seeing it?
Univ of Chicago has done a decent job threading the needle, IMO. Free civil speech, no safe spaces. They are dealing with the same student activists, encampments, etc. to the extent activities fall withing the civil free speech paradigm.

Please read the entire conversation.

I know SEC schools don’t teach that woke crap but the argument was between sending your kids to the “elite” schools or the private Christian schools.

This isn’t even a long thread to read, come on.

Serious question, what is there to be careful about? There's no cost for me to have my kids in those courses?

Piqued my curiosity and so I looked.

This is not accurate if you are looking at Brigham Young University. Now if you are looking at BYU Idaho or Hawaii that may be more accurate.

While true, it is still a bullshite narrative.

Non-college grads includes drop outs.

Tech trades make bank, and with very little (if any) student debt.

It is a great option imho.

That being said, you are generally working with your back and your hands, so that should be taken into consideration.

School is what you make of it.

I went to a public university not considered especially prestigious but tested in the top 10% of my concentration against graduating students from all universities participating.

Said school still gets knocked by other schools in that state by their professors saying “Quick, roll up the window before they throw a diploma in!” when passing by the campus.

It all comes down to what you make of it as well as busting your arse to get the actual credentials as opposed to floating along and saying “I attended X!”

Couldn’t get through one of the roads that run close to campus last week because of a protest. It was less than 50 students probably, but we have a large Muslim and Islam population here

There is an argument that more kids need to enter trades and make a decent to good living sooner than most grads, but the bigger separation in pay takes shape after the first 5-7 years. Unless one of the tradesmen choose to start their own business.

Still a great avenue for many to consider going trades, but it is physically more demanding of course. I know plenty who stay the course and provide a very good lifestyle for their families and have decent to good retirements. They are worn down, joint and back issues, but they by and large benefitted from trades.
