Republican leaders in the Louisiana Legislature started to push last week for Louisiana to join a new federal summer food program for needy children, even after GOP Gov. Jeff Landry’s administration and K-12 schools chief Cade Brumley declined to participate months ago.

Senate President Cameron Henry, R-Metairie, and state Rep. Jack McFarland, R-Jonesboro, said they will meet with state officials this week to insist the food assistance comes to Louisiana this summer, when children are home from school.

Henry said he expects state agencies to make progress toward launching the program in the next two weeks, before the Louisiana Senate Finance Committee convenes to review the state budget proposal.

“We will do whatever we’ve got to do” to get the children’s food program in place for the summer, McFarland told the Louisiana House of Representatives during a budget debate Thursday.

Last week marks the first time Republican state officials have taken a firm, public stance in favor of Louisiana joining the federal Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer Program for Children, or Summer EBT. The GOP-controlled Louisiana House voted unanimously for a budget plan Thursday that included $3.6 million to take part in the initiative.

In exchange for those few million dollars of state money, Louisiana could receive as much as $71 million in federal assistance to help feed 594,000 children through Summer EBT, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates.

The federal government would provide an extra $40 per month per qualifying child in electronic food-buying benefits to low-income households while children are on summer break. President Joe Biden’s administration created the program to help families deal with higher grocery store costs when their children don’t have access to free and reduced-price meals at school.

The money would not only benefit low-income families but also Louisiana grocery stores because people would have more money to spend on food.

Its corporate handouts. They give "poor" kids EBT and grocery stores get a fat revenue bump for the summer. Never mind that the EBT program is the most abused type of government handout conceivable.

It's a popular program and the legislators know this. Plus from a federal standpoint it has already been budgeted....so I guess he figures he should take it.

LOL, right?? We'll be either in the gulags or dead from refusal to be put in the gulags, probably before the mid-century mark at this point.

200 years from now with the trajectory upon which we're riding, this earth will be empty and devoid of all but possibly bacterial life.

The extinction clock is ticking. And all the better, since mankind evolved and advanced to the point that our main priority is now to devolve and self-depricate. We're toast

I know you were being facetious, that wasn't lost on me. I just can't help but laugh about how hilarious it is that society really believes that kicking the can down the road is a solution. The kleptocratic Pelosis and McTurtles of the world amass generational wealth while selling entire nations down the river, knowing they'll be long dead before any of the ramifications manifest. And I truly do not believe mankind makes it to the beginning of the 22nd century.

I dont want the kids to go hungry so lets do something to prevent this.

You get snipped if you have hungry kids so you cant push out more hungry kids.

We need to stop rewarding shitty parenting. This wont change their behavior by giving the shitty parents more money.

A lot of this is being driven by bad press that he's received for this, along with the unforced error that he made by throwing an unnecessary tantrum about the LSU women's basketball team not being present for the National Anthem during the NCAA tournament.

Plus, it's a useless fight. The Louisiana House just passed an almost $48 billion budget. Spending a little over $3 million of state money (a federal match requirement to receive $70 million in federal money) is a drop in the bucket to not look like you're trying to take food out of the mouths of poor children).

Because our Republicans are the big government social conservative brand of Republican. Louisiana is a test bed for this brand now.

Every person that receives EBT, Section 8 or similar "gimmies" should have to spend a month in Manila or Calcutta to experience REAL poverty.

This is factually untrue. Louisiana House Republicans passed a budget that is $4.1 billion less than (that's a proposed spending cut) the operating budget from the end of last year. That's almost an 8% cut, and they haven't even reached what's expected to be a fiscal cliff in 2025.

Why would he give it up?

So someone else can take it?

People need to realize that you cannot starve the beast by declining their money.

It will be given out otherwise. Declining it only hurts us!

You seem to salivate at the opportunity of being a victim.

This is victim fan fiction.

Free food attracts --------------------------------------------------- people who need free food.

It's like "don't feed the animals."

One day, politicians will learn that the best way to get rid of leeches, is to make your (town, city, parish, state, country) unattractive to them.

There are 50 states. They are not all equally attractive to everyone.

It's like putting up a homeless shelter and wondering why there are so many homeless people wandering around.

This is not complicated.

Who is us?

How does declining money that isn't even needed hurt Louisiana if it goes elsewhere?

The "starving children" talk is completely bullshite. There is an obesity epidemic among the poor. The only people going hungry are those that are addicts or mentally ill, that are selling their food stamps or too stupid to apply.

Why? They’re citizens of the richest country on the history of mankind, why would they need to see the standard of living in third-world countries?
